Marian devotion in Contrada Calasci, featuring processions, music, and fireworks

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Contrada Calasci, a district of the municipality of Piraino, in the province of Messina. Perched on a ridge that slopes steeply toward the sea, between the headlands of Capo d'Orlando and Capo Calavà , Piraino is an ancient Nebrodi village known as the "city of two towers." It retains its medieval charm with narrow alleys and stone houses overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands. It is in this setting that, in the heart of July, the Calasci community gathers in Marian devotion.
The festival is linked to the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16th, one of the most beloved dates in Sicilian popular tradition. The highlight is the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the district, accompanied by the faithful in an atmosphere of reflection and participation. The event is organized by the Maria SS. di Lourdes Parish, the spiritual cornerstone of the area, which renews this appointment of faith and community identity every year.
Alongside the religious observance, the festival offers the secular side of Sicilian tradition: after the procession, the evening continues with musical entertainment and concludes with a fireworks display, which illuminates the district's sky and attracts both residents and summer vacationers. It is a social occasion that weaves together devotion, conviviality, and folklore, in line with the town's summer calendar.
The festival is also an opportunity to explore Piraino and its hinterland: the historic center with its medieval towers, the churches and sanctuaries of the village, and the seaside district of Gliaca along the Saracen Coast. Religious traditions mark the rhythm of the year in Piraino, from the feast of Maria SS. di Lourdes in February to the feast of the SS. Ecce Homo in October, and the summer celebrations like that of Mount Carmel, which bring the local districts to life.
The 2026 edition of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Contrada Calasci, Piraino, is expected to take place in July, in keeping with the tradition linked to the July 16th anniversary. Official dates and the program have not yet been released. The festival is expected to feature the customary Marian procession through the streets of the district, followed by musical entertainment and a final fireworks display.
Piraino is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Messina, between Capo d'Orlando and Brolo. By car, take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Brolo, and continue toward the hillside town; Contrada Calasci is one of the municipal districts. By train, the nearest station is Gliaca-Piraino on the Messina-Palermo line, from which you can travel up to the village.
The festival takes place in July, coinciding with the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 16th). It is recommended to check the annual program with the Maria SS. di Lourdes Parish or the Municipality of Piraino.
Participation in the festival and the fireworks display is free and open to all.
