Who was San Castrese

San Castrese (or Castrense) was a 5th-century African bishop and martyr. According to tradition, he was part of a group of African bishops who fled Vandal persecutions and took refuge along the coast of Campania, where they founded and strengthened the first Christian communities. His figure is tied to the Volturno area and Sessa Aurunca, and his veneration has remained uninterrupted for nearly 1,500 years. In addition to Castel Volturno, the saint is also the patron of Marano di Napoli, Sessa Aurunca, and the Sicilian city of Monreale, a testament to a widespread cult with ancient roots.

The February 11th procession

In 2025, the cult of San Castrese experienced an exceptional event: after 848 years, the saint's body, kept in Monreale, returned on a pilgrimage to the Campanian communities linked to his name. The relics were welcomed in Marano on September 1st, 2025, then stopped in Sessa Aurunca and finally in Castel Volturno from September 7th to 9th, 2025, in an extraordinary event that involved thousands of faithful and renewed the bond between the communities devoted to the patron.
