About Sant'Anna Living Nativity

Every December, in the heart of the Sant'Anna district in Giugliano in Campania, one of the most heartfelt living nativity scenes in the area north of Naples comes to life. Titled «Quanno nascette 'o Ninno», dozens of performers animate alleys and courtyards in a journey through living tableaux: carpenters, washerwomen, blacksmiths, shepherds with real animals, and the Three Wise Men on horseback, leading up to the Nativity scene. Organized by the local parish and residents, this free-entry re-enactment is dedicated to the memory of Don Tommaso Cuciniello.

A living nativity in the heart of Sant'Anna

Every December, the Sant'Anna district of Giugliano in Campania, a populous city in the Province of Naples, Campania, transforms into a large open-air nativity scene. Alleys, courtyards, and squares become the natural stage for a re-enactment of the Nativity involving dozens of local performers, gathered under the historic title «Quanno nascette 'o Ninno», taken from the famous Neapolitan Christmas carol.

Living tableaux

The route winds through scenes of daily life reconstructed with philological care, where ancient crafts come back to life before the visitors' eyes. Among the most beloved tableaux:

  • carpenters and washerwomen at work;
  • the blacksmith at the forge and shepherds with real animals, including goats and donkeys;
  • biblical figures, from Herod to the prophet Isaiah, up to the Archangel Gabriel;
  • the Three Wise Men on horseback crossing the district;
  • the Nativity scene, the emotional heart of the entire route.

History and memory

Born in 2011 from the initiative of the Sant'Anna Parish and the district's civic committee, directed by Giulio D'Alterio, the event exceeded one thousand visitors in its very first edition. The event is dedicated to the memory of Don Tommaso Cuciniello, a parish priest who passed away prematurely, and combines religious, artistic, and community values in a project entirely created by the residents.

A community event

More than just a show, the Sant'Anna Living Nativity is a collective ritual that strengthens the district's identity: children, adults, and the elderly wear period costumes and work together to reconstruct the workshops, crafts, and atmospheres of traditional Christmas. Admission is free, in keeping with the popular spirit of sharing that has animated the event since its inception.

When it takes place

The re-enactment is held during the Christmas season, with performances concentrated between late December and the Epiphany. Exact dates and times are communicated year by year by the organizers through the channels of the parish and the Pro Loco of Giugliano in Campania.
