The Ballata del Giglio in the Norman city, blending devotion, music, and folk tradition

In Aversa, located in the heart of the Caserta province in Campania, the Gigli Festival—experienced here in its local Ballata del Giglio variation—is one of the most cherished events in the city's folk tradition. Inspired by the famous Gigli Festival of Nola and widespread throughout the area northeast of Naples, the event combines religious devotion, neighborhood identity, and street performance into a collective ritual that involves the entire community.
The absolute star of the festival is the giglio, a massive, richly decorated wooden structure that the portatori (bearers) lift and dance with on their shoulders through the streets of the historic center. This rhythmic movement, accompanied by live music, is the so-called ballata: the most anticipated and spectacular moment of the day, where physical strength, coordination, and passion merge into a gesture filled with meaning. The paranze, the organized groups that build and carry the giglio, represent the true engine of the tradition and a powerful element of social cohesion.
The primary organizing body for the Aversa festival is the Comitato Bisceglia, which brings the giglio to the streets with the Orgoglio Normanno paranza—a name that proudly recalls Aversa's Norman roots as the first Norman county in Italy. A network of enthusiasts, families, and volunteers revolves around the committee, renewing their commitment to the event's preparation each year, from building the structure to rehearsals and the day of the ballata itself.
More than just an event, the Aversa Gigli Festival is an occasion for community gathering where devotion, memory, and folk celebration meet. The streets fill with residents and visitors who follow the giglio during its morning and evening dances, amidst applause, singing, and an atmosphere of authentic enthusiasm. It is a free-entry event, designed to be experienced on the street, side by side with the community that keeps it alive.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Aversa, an elegant town in the province of Caserta rich in churches, courtyards, and evidence of its Norman past. Those who participate in the Ballata del Giglio experience an authentic piece of the Campanian identity, where tradition is not a tourist show but a shared experience among the inhabitants.
The official portal dedicated to the Gigli festivals confirms the participation of the Comitato Bisceglia with the Orgoglio Normanno paranza in the 2026 edition of the Aversa Gigli Festival. The exact date and detailed program have not yet been published: following the 2025 edition, which took place in October, the ballata is expected during the same period of the year.
As per tradition, the day should consist of morning and evening dances, with the giglio carried on shoulders along the streets of Aversa's historic center. Official information regarding the date, times, and route will be released by the organizers via the gigli.app portal and the committee's social media pages.
The festival takes place along the streets and squares of the historic center of Aversa, in the province of Caserta (Campania).
