Devotion to the patron saint of the throat in the San Biagio district of Castell'Umberto
In the first days of February, the San Biagio district of the town of Castell'Umberto, perched at an altitude of about 660 metres in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, gathers around the figure of its patron martyr. The San Biagio Festival is one of the most heartfelt and ancient traditions in the area: a religious and popular celebration that weaves together devotion, historical memory, and community identity in the heart of the Nebrodi region of Sicily.
Saint Blaise (San Biagio), Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and a 4th-century martyr, is universally venerated as the protector of the throat. In Castell'Umberto, his festival retains all the charm of tradition: after the Eucharistic celebration, the priest imparts the blessing of the throat to the faithful, placing two crossed candles under the chin and invoking the saint's intercession against throat ailments and all other evils. It is one of the most anticipated and evocative ritual gestures of the entire celebration.
The heart of the festivities takes place in the district of the same name, which preserves the memory of the rock-hewn chapel dedicated to San Biagio, linked to the ancient village of Castania from which the current Castell'Umberto descends. The festival includes a pilgrimage by the faithful, the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, and the long-awaited distribution of the San Biagio bread rolls—small, blessed devotional loaves that serve as a symbol of protection and good fortune.
Visiting the San Biagio Festival is also an opportunity to discover Castell'Umberto, a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants immersed in the Nebrodi landscape, amidst forests, ancient stones, and living traditions. The village guards the traces of the ancient Castania and a religious heritage that tells centuries of history in an authentic and still little-known corner of the province of Messina.
On February 2 and 3, 2026, the San Biagio district of Castell'Umberto celebrated its patron martyr with the usual festivities: Holy Masses, the procession of the saint's statue along the streets of the district, the blessing of the throat imparted to the faithful with crossed candles, and the distribution of the traditional San Biagio bread rolls. A tradition that, as every year, brought the Nebrodi community together around its religious and popular identity.
Traditional festival program: eve and opening moments in the San Biagio district; Holy Masses in honor of the martyr; procession of the statue from the district to the church and back; blessing of the throat with crossed candles; distribution of the blessed San Biagio bread rolls.
Castell'Umberto can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit and continuing towards the interior of the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest train station is Capo d'Orlando-Naso, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The festival traditionally takes place at the beginning of February, around the 3rd, the liturgical feast day of San Biagio.
The event is free and religious in nature. Warm clothing is recommended given the altitude and the winter season, as well as comfortable footwear for the pilgrimage and procession.
