The patronal feast of the Nebrodi mountains, featuring processions, relics, and the Saint's "journeys"
The Feast of Saint Calogero the Hermit is the most important celebration in San Salvatore di Fitalia, a small village in the province of Messina perched in the Nebrodi mountains of Sicily. The cult of the saint dates back to 1537, the year Saint Calogero was proclaimed the town's patron: for nearly five centuries, the community has renewed this devotion every summer from August 19th to 21st, blending faith, identity, and popular tradition.
The eve of August 19th opens with the firing of mortars and Holy Mass at the Sanctuary; in the afternoon, the evocative pilgrimage of the Mayors from the Diocese of Patti takes place, followed by the procession of the holy relics, kept in a precious 1724 silver reliquary.
August 20th is the main day: after the procession of the Holy Child, a sea of pilgrims gathers in the Sanctuary for the Solemn Mass at 11:00 AM, featuring the traditional panegyric. The most anticipated moment is the descent of the statue of Saint Calogero from its niche in the wooden tabernacle: an ingenious system of ropes raises and lowers the statue three times, a gesture through which the Saint bestows his graces upon the faithful. The day concludes in the square with a large concert and spectacular fireworks.
August 21st, the day of the village festival, features the most characteristic ritual. In the evening, the faithful gather again around the statue in the Basilica of the Most Holy Savior for Holy Mass, followed by the long procession through the village streets. This is when Saint Calogero performs his famous "journeys": the platform travels over the same stretches of road multiple times in a back-and-forth movement of unpredictable duration, ensuring that every family can receive the requested grace. It is a moment of intense participation that gives the Fitalese tradition its name.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival enlivens the entire historic center with brass bands, illuminations, market stalls, and various summer events. Over the years, the August 20th program has hosted concerts by major national artists, transforming Piazza San Calogero into a magnet for thousands of people. The festival, recognized as a site of pious visitation for the Jubilee, is now an identity-defining event that celebrates the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Nebrodi.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Calogero the Hermit confirms the traditional August 19-21 calendar. It opens on August 19th with the eve, the firing of mortars, Holy Mass at the Sanctuary, the pilgrimage of the Mayors of the Diocese of Patti, and the procession of the holy relics. August 20th is the highlight, with the Solemn Mass at 11:00 AM, the spectacular descent of the statue from the wooden tabernacle, the evening concert in Piazza San Calogero, and fireworks. August 21st concludes with the evening procession during which Saint Calogero performs his traditional "journeys" through the town streets.
