In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina, the village of Castell'Umberto celebrates its most cherished event every year in late August: the Festival in honor of San Vincenzo Ferreri, the town's Patron Saint. It is the second and most significant of the two annual celebrations dedicated to the Saint (the other takes place in April for the liturgical feast): three days where religious devotion, popular tradition, and community identity merge into a unique experience.
San Vincenzo Ferreri, a Dominican friar born in Valencia in 1350, has been the Patron Saint of Castell'Umberto since the mid-15th century. The devotion was brought to the ancient village of Castania (the original core of modern-day Castell'Umberto) by the Blessed Giovanni da Pistoia, who gifted the community precious relics of the Saint and promoted the construction of a convent and church run by Dominican friars.
The August festival is specifically linked to the famous miracle of August 26, 1640: according to tradition, San Vincenzo brought back to life the son of the noblewoman of the County of Mirto, a miracle that is still remembered today and has consecrated the Saint as "the Saint of miracles".
The celebrations traditionally take place from August 26th to 28th, blending religious rites with secular festivities:
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers entertainment for the whole community: concerts in Piazza IV Novembre, light displays, and the unmissable fireworks show that closes the celebrations, illuminating the sky over the Nebrodi village. In the 2025 edition, the square hosted a concert by the legendary Matia Bazar, confirming the event's ability to combine deep popular spirituality with the appeal of a great town festival.
More than just a patronal feast, the August San Vincenzo festival is a time for homecoming and reunion: it draws many emigrants and faithful from across the Nebrodi region, weaving together devotion, memory, and belonging in the small town of Castell'Umberto, in the Province of Messina, Sicily.
The San Vincenzo Ferreri Festival returns in the summer of 2026 to Castell'Umberto, in the Nebrodi Mountains in the province of Messina. According to established tradition, the August patronal feast is held in the last days of the month, with rites culminating on August 28th, a date linked to the famous miracle of 1640.
The official dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. As every year, the processions of the "radicula" relic, the solemn procession of the Patron Saint with the blessing at the Serro di San Vincenzo, concerts in Piazza IV Novembre, and the final fireworks display are expected. For updates, please refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Castell'Umberto and the parish.
