Christmas among bagpipers, Pagghiari bonfires, and Nebrodi traditions

Nestled in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, in the Province of Messina, Galati Mamertino has long been known as the "Land of the Zampogna". Here, the zampogna — the ciaramedda of the Sicilian tradition — is more than just a musical instrument accompanying Christmas: it is a living craft, passed down through generations, to the point that the instrument is still played and handcrafted in the village workshops. Building on this heritage, the Municipality of Galati Mamertino organizes a rich calendar of Christmas Festivities every year, turning the historic center into a vibrant stage for music, bonfires, and folk traditions.
The festival unfolds throughout the holiday season, from December 21st until Epiphany. The heart of the events is Piazza San Giacomo, illuminated and decorated for the occasion, which hosts concerts, entertainment, games for children, and evenings dedicated to rediscovering local food and wine. The sounds of the bagpipers accompany the bonfires lit in the neighborhoods, creating the warm, intimate atmosphere that has always characterized Christmas in the mountains.
A symbolic highlight of the program is the Zampogna Festival, a well-established tradition. The day, centered around the local bagpipers, features a warm welcome in Piazza San Giacomo, a parade through the streets of the village and the San Basilio hamlet, cultural insights into the history of the instrument, and a grand final performance accompanied by tastings of local products. It is the moment when the community openly celebrates its musical vocation.
The most evocative ritual takes place on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, with the Pagghiari: large bonfires that recall the shelters once used by shepherds. From late afternoon until late at night, between the Church of the Rosary and the most characteristic corners of the village, the ciaramiddari play and tell ancient stories, while around the neighborhood bonfires, visitors can enjoy fresh local ricotta, wine, and typical Nebrodi specialties. The Festival of January 2nd in the San Basilio hamlet is also a deeply felt event, now firmly rooted in the community.
More than just a series of events, the Christmas Festivities of Galati Mamertino are a journey into the folk and gastronomic traditions of the Messina mountains. Every year, the Municipal Administration crafts the program with the goal of rediscovering the magic of Christmas and attracting visitors and tourists from all over Sicily, enhancing an intangible heritage — that of the zampogna — which makes this Nebrodi village a unique place in Sicily.
The calendar for the 2026-2027 Christmas festival in Galati Mamertino has not yet been released. The event, which has been recurring for many years, is expected to confirm its traditional structure: events in Piazza San Giacomo, performances by bagpipers, neighborhood bonfires, the Zampogna Festival, and the Epiphany Pagghiari on January 6th. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Galati Mamertino for official dates and the final program.
Events take place in the historic center of Galati Mamertino (Province of Messina, Sicily), with the epicenter in Piazza San Giacomo. Some events involve the San Basilio hamlet and the area around the Church of the Rosary.
By car: from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the exit for Sant'Agata di Militello or Rocca di Caprileone, then follow the inland road towards the Nebrodi Mountains. The nearest train station is in Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line, from where you can continue by car or local bus services.
The festival is held during the Christmas holidays, approximately from December 21st to January 6th. Events in the square are generally free of charge. Warm clothing is recommended: evening events take place outdoors in a mountain environment.
