The masked parade through the streets of San Pietro Vernotico

Every year, between February and the start of Lent, San Pietro Vernotico — a town of about 15,000 inhabitants in the province of Brindisi, Puglia, located halfway between the Adriatic capital and Lecce — dresses up in the colors of its Sampietrano Carnival. The festival transforms the town center into a long procession of masks, costumed groups, and shared joy, marking one of the town's most cherished popular traditions.
The Sampietrano Carnival has its roots in the Milanese Ambrosian Carnival. The local tradition was born thanks to the presence of the Lombard Zonda family, who invested in local agricultural activities in the late 19th century, bringing with them the customs and timing of the Northern carnival. For this reason, just as in Milan, the festival was traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent rather than in the days preceding Ash Wednesday.
The heart of the historical event was the famous Carnevalone, with its parades of allegorical floats that entertained the community for over a century. Large floats and costumed groups paraded through the streets of San Pietro Vernotico from the early 20th century until 2006, when the float-based format was discontinued. In subsequent years, the memory of that era has been preserved through photographic exhibitions and displays of vintage costumes, promoted by local cultural associations.
The contemporary version of the Sampietrano Carnival is organized by local associations and focuses on the masked parade through the town streets. While the large allegorical floats of the past are gone, the event now features costumed groups, families, children, and individual masks parading amidst confetti and streamers, accompanied by music stations along the route. The day concludes with an awards ceremony for the most original, beautiful, and fun groups and masks.
Alongside the main parade, other local associations offer festive moments dedicated especially to children, such as animated events held at the town's multipurpose centers. The Carnival is thus part of the rich calendar of traditions in San Pietro Vernotico, which also includes the Flag Auction, the Feast of Saint Peter the Patron Saint, and the Snail Festival.
Free and open to everyone, the Sampietrano Carnival is above all a community celebration: an occasion for the town to gather in the streets, amidst colors and music, to renew a ritual that speaks to the history and identity of this corner of the Salento region in Puglia.
The official dates for the 2026 edition of the Sampietrano Carnival have not yet been published. Following the tradition of previous years, a new appointment with the masked parade through the streets of San Pietro Vernotico, in the province of Brindisi, is expected during the Carnival period. The program with times, route, and participation details for the costume contests will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
