The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most cherished tradition in Villa Baldassarri, the only hamlet of the municipality of Guagnano, located in the heart of northern Salento in the province of Lecce (Apulia). Our Lady of Carmel is the patron saint of this small village, which honors her every year with a festival rooted in history: the devotional tradition has been documented for over two centuries, making this event a cornerstone of the local community's identity.
The bond between Villa Baldassarri and the Virgin of Carmel is deeply woven into the history of the village. The heart of the celebrations is the Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo, a parish church that began as a small chapel in the 17th century, was expanded in the 18th, and consecrated in the early 19th century. For generations, the devotion of the inhabitantsโknown in the local dialect as Baldassarresiโhas centered around this place of worship.
The festival takes place during the first days of September and is entirely dedicated to religious celebrations in honor of the patron saint. The program includes solemn holy masses, moments of communal prayer, and the procession of the statue of Our Lady of Carmel through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful and a brass band concert. The evening traditionally concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the village sky, creating a festive atmosphere that blends spiritual reflection with popular participation.
Beyond the liturgical aspect, the festival retains the charm of traditional Salento patronal feasts: the illuminations decorating the streets, the band marching through the town, and the reunion of families and emigrants returning for the occasion. It is a community celebration where faith intertwines with the identity of an agricultural and wine-growing land, home to the Negroamaro grape and the typical products of Salento.
The celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Carmel occur just days before the historic Pork Festival (Sagra del Maiale), one of the longest-running gastronomic events in Salento, also held in Villa Baldassarri. The first weekend of September thus becomes a single, grand festive moment, where religious devotion and culinary conviviality follow one another, transforming the village into a beloved destination of the Salento summer.
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will return in 2026 to Villa Baldassarri, the only hamlet of the municipality of Guagnano, in the province of Lecce. As every year, the celebrations in honor of the patron saint are expected in the first days of September, featuring holy masses, the procession of the Virgin's statue, and traditional popular festivities. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: the complete religious program will be published by the parish of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Villa Baldassarri is the only hamlet of Guagnano (LE), located about 2.5 km from the town center and about twenty kilometers from Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the provincial road (SP) connecting Guagnano to neighboring towns; the reference railway station is Lecce, from which you can continue by car or local connections.
The celebrations take place in the first days of September, with the main events occurring on September 2nd and 3rd. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
Religious celebrations and festivities take place in public spaces throughout the village and are free to attend.
