About Feast of Our Lady of Carmel

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patronal festival of Villa Baldassarri, the only hamlet in the municipality of Guagnano, in the province of Lecce. Celebrated for over two centuries during the first days of September, it is a deeply felt event of Salento popular devotion, featuring holy masses, the solemn procession of the Virgin's statue through the village streets, brass band concerts, and fireworks. The religious celebrations precede the historic Pork Festival, marking the heart of summer in Villa Baldassarri.

The patronal feast of Villa Baldassarri

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most cherished tradition in Villa Baldassarri, the only hamlet of the municipality of Guagnano, located in the heart of northern Salento in the province of Lecce (Apulia). Our Lady of Carmel is the patron saint of this small village, which honors her every year with a festival rooted in history: the devotional tradition has been documented for over two centuries, making this event a cornerstone of the local community's identity.

A devotion spanning over two centuries

The bond between Villa Baldassarri and the Virgin of Carmel is deeply woven into the history of the village. The heart of the celebrations is the Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo, a parish church that began as a small chapel in the 17th century, was expanded in the 18th, and consecrated in the early 19th century. For generations, the devotion of the inhabitantsโ€”known in the local dialect as Baldassarresiโ€”has centered around this place of worship.

The religious program

The festival takes place during the first days of September and is entirely dedicated to religious celebrations in honor of the patron saint. The program includes solemn holy masses, moments of communal prayer, and the procession of the statue of Our Lady of Carmel through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful and a brass band concert. The evening traditionally concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the village sky, creating a festive atmosphere that blends spiritual reflection with popular participation.

Faith, music, and community

Beyond the liturgical aspect, the festival retains the charm of traditional Salento patronal feasts: the illuminations decorating the streets, the band marching through the town, and the reunion of families and emigrants returning for the occasion. It is a community celebration where faith intertwines with the identity of an agricultural and wine-growing land, home to the Negroamaro grape and the typical products of Salento.

The prelude to the Pork Festival

The celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Carmel occur just days before the historic Pork Festival (Sagra del Maiale), one of the longest-running gastronomic events in Salento, also held in Villa Baldassarri. The first weekend of September thus becomes a single, grand festive moment, where religious devotion and culinary conviviality follow one another, transforming the village into a beloved destination of the Salento summer.
