The patronal feast of Novoli

In the heart of northern Salento, the town of Novoli (Province of Lecce, Puglia) celebrates its patron saint and protector every year: Maria Santissima del Pane. The event takes place on the third Sunday of July, transforming the historic center for a few days into a grand space of devotion and celebration, with religious rites, processions, brass band concerts, evening shows, and the essential illuminations that light up Piazza Regina Margherita and Piazza Aldo Moro.

The history of the Madonna del Pane

The devotion of Novoli to the Madonna del Pane dates back, according to tradition, to 1707, when the community credited the Virgin with ending a severe epidemic that had struck the town. The venerated image derives from the ancient Byzantine iconography of the Odegitria, the Madonna "who shows the way," also known as the Madonna of Constantinople. The popular title "Madonna del Pane" (Our Lady of the Bread) recalls the act of charity linked to the distribution of blessed bread to the poor: a symbol of sustenance and protection that the people of Novoli affectionately call the Matonna nòscia, our "Madonna."

Religious rites and procession

The spiritual heart of the feast is the procession with the statue of the Virgin, which travels through the streets of the center accompanied by the faithful and musical bands. During the days of the feast, Holy Masses are held from the early hours of the morning, followed by the transfer of the statue to the Mother Church and the solemn Eucharistic Celebration, often presided over by the Archbishop of Lecce. Numerous votive shrines scattered throughout the historic center testify to how deep this Marian devotion truly is.

Music, shows, and flavors

Alongside the religious program, the civil festivities offer brass band concerts performed by renowned Apulian ensembles, comedy and musical shows, evening entertainment in the square, and events dedicated to families. There is no shortage of food and wine moments, with tastings of typical Salento products and initiatives that combine local culture and flavors. The event is coordinated by the Maria SS. del Pane Feast Committee, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Novoli, the Pro Loco, and the support of the Puglia Region.

When it takes place

The feast is centered on the third Sunday of July, with religious and civil events spread across the days immediately before and after. It is the ideal opportunity to discover Novoli, a small town known throughout Salento also for the spectacular Fòcara of Saint Anthony Abbot, and to experience the authentic atmosphere of a southern Italian patronal feast.
