The patron saints San Marco and Santa Caterina and the Beddhra Cilinu Festival in Cellino San Marco
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Patronal Feast of San Marco and Santa Caterina is the most cherished tradition in Cellino San Marco, a village in the lower Salento region of the province of Brindisi, in Apulia. Celebrated on the last Sunday of July, it is known by locals as "Santu Marcu Rande" (Big Saint Mark), to distinguish it from the "Santu Marcu picciccu" held on April 25th, which hosts the historic horse and livestock fair. The town's patron saints are Saint Mark the Evangelist and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose statues are venerated with deep devotion.
The most poignant religious moment is the solemn procession winding through the historic center: the statues of the two saints are carried on shoulders amidst prayers, hymns, and the moving participation of the faithful, accompanied by a brass band. Liturgical celebrations in the mother church mark the days of the festival, uniting the community around its spiritual roots.
Beyond the religious observance, the festival features a rich secular program that engages all ages. The beating heart is the Beddhra Cilinu Festival, set up in Piazza Aldo Moro: evenings are enlivened by concerts, cabaret shows, and an exhibition dedicated to traditional farming tools. At the local producers' stalls, visitors can taste the most authentic flavors of Salento, from wine to extra virgin olive oil, along with traditional dishes: orecchiette (ricchitelle or pizzicarieddhri), gnemmarieddhri, favenette e cicureddhre, and stuffed focaccias.
Cellino San Marco is also famous as the home of Al Bano Carrisi, who has his wine estates here: a connection that strengthens the food and wine identity of the area. The patronal feast is the occasion when the entire community gathers, blending popular faith, rural traditions, and Salento conviviality.
The 2026 edition of the Cellino San Marco Patronal Feast will likely follow its usual schedule on the last Sunday of July, as per tradition. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been published: as soon as they are available, details regarding the procession of the patrons San Marco and Santa Caterina, the market fair, and the Beddhra Cilinu Festival in Piazza Aldo Moro will be announced.
Cellino San Marco can be reached by car via the SS613 Brindisi-Lecce road, taking the Cellino San Marco exit. The Cellino San Marco train station is on the Bari-Lecce Adriatic line. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Salento (approx. 25 km) and Bari-Palese.
Religious celebrations, the procession, the fair, and the Beddhra Cilinu Festival are free to attend and take place in the historic center and Piazza Aldo Moro. For the updated program, it is recommended to consult the Pro Loco of Cellino San Marco and the Municipality's official channels.
