About Saliscendi Festival

Every July, the Saliscendi area of Teano, in the province of Caserta, comes alive for the celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Carmine: four days blending faith, popular tradition, and great food. The highlight is the Pizzonta and Arrosticini Festival, dedicated to the delicious local fried pizza served plain, with sauce, or with mortadella. The event also features a solemn procession accompanied by a brass band, street performers, evening concerts, and a midnight fireworks display.

A local festival blending faith and conviviality

The Saliscendi Festival is the most cherished summer event in this small locality within the Municipality of Teano, in the Alto Casertano area of the province of Caserta, Campania. At the heart of the event is the devotion to the Madonna del Carmine, celebrated around the chapel located near the Bivio di Riardo, along the Via Casilina. Every year, this site hosts a program that bridges religious and secular calendars, featuring liturgical celebrations, a procession, tastings, and open-air entertainment.

This is a community festival in the most authentic sense: not a large city event, but a tradition built by the residents of the district, who for a few days transform the streets of Saliscendi into a meeting place open to families, curious visitors, and neighbors from nearby towns.

The Pizzonta, queen of the festival

The signature dish of the event is the pizzonta, a savory local fried pizza that gives its name to the Saliscendi Pizzonta and Arrosticini Festival. It is offered in two versions: the classic, simple and crispy, and the version topped with tomato sauce or mortadella. It is paired with arrosticini, the Abruzzo-style sheep meat skewers that have become a staple of the gastronomic culture of central-southern Italy, grilled over charcoal throughout the evening.

Over time, the festival has carved out its own space within the patronal celebrations, becoming the main draw for visitors from outside the area. Alongside the food stalls, there are free tastings of local products and wines, which serve as a prelude to the festivities on the opening night.

A program between the sacred and the secular

The festival structure follows a well-established pattern, alternating moments of reflection with evenings of entertainment:

  • Holy Mass at the Madonna del Carmine chapel during the festival evenings;
  • Free tasting of local products and wines with musical entertainment;
  • Foosball Tournament, a fun-filled event highly popular among the youth;
  • Pizzonta and Arrosticini Festival, with live music and comedy shows;
  • Solemn Holy Mass and Sacred Procession through the streets of the locality, led by the marching band;
  • 'A Riffa, the traditional public auction of local products on Sunday afternoon;
  • Fireworks at midnight to close the festivities.

Music, street performers, and fireworks

The final evening has given the festival a broader dimension in recent years: the street performers' festival, with roaming performances among the crowd, precedes the concerts that enliven the square until late at night. Folk and dance music are joined by well-known names from the Neapolitan scene and local party bands, catering to an intentionally intergenerational audience. The grand finale is provided by the fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Alto Casertano.

Teano and the Alto Casertano

Teano is one of the most historically significant towns in the province of Caserta: the ancient Teanum Sidicinum, it preserves one of the largest Roman theaters in Southern Italy and a medieval historic center. It is etched in national memory for the famous 1860 meeting between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II. The municipal territory extends over the slopes of Roccamonfina, an extinct volcano that is now a regional park, in an area renowned for its olive oil, wines, and cheeses.

Participating in the Saliscendi Festival therefore means discovering a corner of the inland Campania region far from mass tourism circuits, where local food festivals remain the most direct way to connect with the local cuisine and people.

Organizers

The festivities are managed by the Saliscendi Festival Committee, supported by the association La Giovane Comunità, which gathers funds and volunteers every year to set up the festival area, food stalls, and shows. Admission to secular events is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.

Saliscendi Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saliscendi Festival took place from Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19 in the Saliscendi district of Teano, with four days dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine. The calendar combined Holy Masses and a solemn procession with free tastings, a foosball tournament, the eighth edition of the Pizzonta and Arrosticini Festival, and a closing evening with street performers, a concert by Tony Tammaro, and midnight fireworks.

Four days of celebration in Saliscendi

In 2026, the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Carmine spanned four days, from July 16 to 19, confirming the growth of a festival that started as a local neighborhood event and has become a recognized appointment throughout the Alto Casertano.

The formula alternated religious moments around the local chapel with a very rich secular program. Thursday featured a free tasting of local products and wines to open the festival, Friday was dedicated to the Grand Foosball Tournament, while Saturday hosted the eighth edition of the Saliscendi Pizzonta and Arrosticini Festival, the event's signature dish.

Sunday brought together the most solemn and spectacular parts: the Solemn Holy Mass with the bishop and the procession in the morning, the public auction of local products in the afternoon, and in the evening the Saliscendi Experience — Contemporary Folk Festival with street performers, live music, and the grand pyrotechnic finale at midnight.
