The patronal feast of the seaside village of Sferracavallo, in Palermo

The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival is the heart of religious and civic life in Sferracavallo, the ancient seaside village nestled in the Baia del Corallo, at the northwestern tip of the Municipality of Palermo, in Sicily. Every year, during the last week of September, the entire village pauses to honor its patron saints, two physician brothers and martyrs revered as protectors of fishermen and the sick.
The cult dates back to the 17th century. Initially, Saints Cosmas and Damian were celebrated with great solemnity in the city of Palermo, but following the discovery of Saint Rosalia's relics in 1624 and her proclamation as the city's patron saint, devotion to the two martyrs found its home in Sferracavallo. The small fishing community embraced this presence and built its own identity around the two saints, preserving over the centuries a tradition that now counts more than one hundred and seventy editions.
The element that makes this festival unique in Italy is the procession of the float. The bearers advance barefoot, dressed in white with red scarves tied around their waists and necks, and for nearly twelve hours, they carry the heavy wooden statues of the saints through the village streets. What amazes visitors is the fast pace, marked by the rhythm of the marches played by the band: a ritual dance that gives the procession a liveliness and joy unmatched by other Sicilian patronal festivals.
The Sferracavallo festival is not just folklore: it is the way a fishing community renews its bond with its patrons and its history every year. The solemn concluding procession often sees the participation of the Archbishop of Palermo, a sign of the value the Palermitan Church places on this popular tradition deeply rooted in the territory.
The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival will return to Sferracavallo, a seaside village in Palermo, in the last week of September 2026. At the moment, the SS. Cosmas and Damian Parish has not yet published the official dates or the program for the edition.
Tradition suggests the unfolding of the most anticipated moments: the procession of the float with barefoot bearers dressed in white with red scarves, the characteristic fast pace to the rhythm of the marches, the parade of the sancusimicchi, the pyrotechnic alborata on the pier, the historic regatta of the lancitelle, the market fair, and the final fireworks over the Baia del Corallo.
Sferracavallo is a seaside village in the northwestern area of Palermo, at the foot of Capo Gallo. By car, it can be reached from the Palermo ring road (Viale Regione Siciliana) in the direction of Mondello/Sferracavallo. By bus, several AMAT lines connect the center of Palermo to the village.
The festival takes place in the last week of September, with the main events occurring between Friday and Monday. The 2026 dates have not yet been officially announced.
Admission to the processions, alborata, regatta, and fireworks is free. Sferracavallo is also famous for its seafood restaurants: a perfect opportunity to combine the festival with local maritime gastronomy.
