The patronal feast of the Capo district in Palermo, featuring processions, the Scinnuta, and the Vulata degli angeli
The Feast of Maria SS. della Mercede is the patronal festival of the historic Capo district in Palermo, located in the heart of the ancient center of the Municipality of Palermo, in Sicily. Affectionately called by the locals the "Madonna Miccè" (from the local dialect, while "Mercè" is the Spanish form and "Mercede" the Italian one), the Virgin has been for centuries the identity symbol of a popular neighborhood made of alleys, workshops, and the lively Capo market. Every year, in the last week of September, the entire district transforms to honor her with a dense calendar of religious rites and popular traditions.
The cult has its roots in the Order of the Mercedarians, founded in 1218 by Saint Peter Nolasco for the redemption of Christian slaves: the title "Mercede," from the Spanish, evokes the grace and merciful intercession of the Virgin. The church dedicated to Maria SS. della Mercede stands on the elevated part of Piazza Capo, and the Confraternity that guards this devotion was born as a company in 1590, with statutes registered in 1683, becoming a full-fledged confraternity in 1814. The heart of the festival is the venerated wooden statue, carved by the Palermo sculptor Girolamo Bagnasco in the early 19th century: the Virgin, in Mercedarian robes and resting on clouds with her foot on the moon, holds the Child, the scapular, and flowers.
The festivities open with the affacciata, the display of the statue on the church threshold, and with the officiatura, a solemn act of dedication of the district to the Virgin. In the following days, the solemn triduum, the procession of the small statue with children, the vespers with the offering of roses, and the morning alborata take place, when the neighborhood wakes up to the sound of firecrackers and festive bells.
The Mercede festival is one of the most heartfelt expressions of Palermo's popular religiosity: a choral rite that unites entire generations of the district, amidst illuminations, stalls, band music, and the scent of traditional sweets. The grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks display at the Foro Italico (Foro Umberto I), on the seafront, which illuminates the sky of Palermo, closing days of faith, celebration, and neighborhood belonging.
The festivities open on Wednesday, September 17: at 7:30 PM, the brass band announces the festival through the streets of the district, while at 9:00 PM, the officiatura takes place, a solemn act of dedication of the district to the Madonna in Piazza Capo. Thursday, September 24, the liturgical solemnity, at 5:00 PM the drummers' parade crosses the district, and at 11:00 PM, the light and fireworks show "I Travulisi del Capo" takes the stage.
Saturday, September 27, at 4:30 PM, the procession of the small statue travels through the streets of Capo. Sunday, September 28 is the day of the big celebration: at 5:00 PM, the triumphal exit of the statue and the traditional Scinnuta along the staircase, welcomed by the crowd; in the evening, the acchianata (return ascent) to Piazza Capo around 11:45 PM and the return to the church at midnight.
Monday, September 29, at 10:00 PM, the magnificent fireworks display at the Foro Italico (Foro Umberto I) closes the 2026 edition. All events are free to attend.
