The maritime ritual of the Madonna delle Grazie in the fishing village of Mondello, Palermo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sea Procession of Maria SS. delle Grazie is one of the most evocative and defining celebrations of the fishing village of Mondello, a seaside district of the city of Palermo, in Sicily. Known to locals as the festival of the 'Marunnuzza', it is rooted in the devotion of fishermen to the Madonna delle Grazie, the protector of seafarers and patron saint of the village.
Mondello's devotion to the Madonna delle Grazie is tied to the history of its fortified tower and tuna fishery, around which a fishing village grew over the centuries. This maritime community fostered a cult passed down through generations, which still draws thousands of faithful and curious visitors to the village today. The painting of the Madonna delle Grazie, to which the fishermen once turned for protection, is kept in the village church, managed by the San Girolamo Parish.
The festival day begins with an open-air mass at the small harbor of Mondello. Once the religious service concludes, the most anticipated moment begins: the transfer of the statue of the Madonna onto a boat, which carries her out to sea, followed by numerous vessels carrying the faithful.
The procession traditionally takes place in July, over a weekend that brings the life of the village to a standstill for a few hours. It is a unique ritual in the Palermo region, aimed at the fishermen of the city's coastal districts, and represents one of the most authentic moments of the Mondello summer, far from the tourist crowds of the famous beach.
Attending the sea procession means connecting with the deepest soul of Mondello: popular spirituality, the bond with the sea, and the memory of the fishermen. It is an intense and picturesque experience, amidst the white of the boats, the flickering candle flames, and the colors of the gulf at sunset, showcasing the most authentic side of the Province of Palermo and Sicily.
The Sea Procession of Maria SS. delle Grazie will return to the fishing village of Mondello, in Palermo, in the summer of 2026. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event is traditionally scheduled for July. The ritual that has united the community for generations will be renewed: the open-air mass at the harbor, the transfer of the 'Marunnuzza' onto a boat heading out to sea, the flotilla of candlelit boats, and the floral wreaths cast into the sea in memory of those lost at sea. It is recommended to check the final program with the San Girolamo Parish of Mondello closer to the event date.
