The historic Marian festival in the Capo-Noviziato district of Palermo

The Procession of Maria SS. del Lume at the Noviziato is one of the most deeply felt and ancient religious events in the historic center of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. The devotion to the Madonna del Lume began in 1722 in the Noviziato district, between the Capo area and the current parish, through the work of the Jesuit fathers. According to tradition, a visionary nun received instructions on how the Virgin wished to be depicted and invoked: "Maria Madre Santissima del Lume" (Mary Most Holy Mother of Light), a light that guides the intellect, brings serenity to one's actions, and accompanies the faithful toward a good death.
Around this cult, a confraternity was formed in 1736 by a group of workers from various trades in the Sant'Ippolito district, located opposite the Noviziato church. Its statutes were approved in 1742 and have been renewed over time. To this day, the confraternity oversees the festival and accompanies the statue, wearing their characteristic white robes with light blue trim. The center of the celebrations is the parish of San Stanislao Kostka at the Noviziato, in Piazza Noviziato, in the city of Palermo, the capital of the Province of Palermo.
The heart of the festival is the statue of the Madonna del Lume, a sculptural group created in 1905 by the sculptor Pisciotta. On the last Sunday of July, following a week of liturgical preparation, the float leaves the church decorated with colorful paper streamers and is carried on shoulders through the streets of the district. The procession winds its way through:
The return of the statue to the church is greeted by an impressive fireworks display, the most anticipated highlight of the entire day.
The festival is not limited to the procession alone: in the days leading up to it, the parish hosts solemn masses, prayer sessions, floral tributes, and meetings that involve the entire Noviziato and Capo community. It is an occasion where popular faith, tradition, and neighborhood life intertwine, offering an authentic glimpse of devotional and popular Palermo.
The devotion to the Madonna del Lume, which also spread to Porticello, Roccapalumba, and—thanks to Jesuit missionaries—to Mexico, California, and beyond, finds one of its deepest roots in Palermo. The Noviziato procession thus represents a precious piece of the city's intangible heritage and popular traditions, passed down from generation to generation for over three centuries.
The 2026 edition of the Procession of Maria SS. del Lume at the Noviziato does not yet have an official published program. Following the custom handed down for over three centuries, the celebrations will presumably take place on the last Sunday of July, with the procession of the 1905 statue through the streets of the Capo-Noviziato district of Palermo, accompanied by hymns, brass bands, torches, and a final fireworks display. The exact dates and times will be made known by the confraternity and the parish of San Stanislao Kostka closer to the festival.
