The painted barrel race and medieval historical re-enactment in the heart of Gioia del Colle
In the heart of the Bari Murgia, the Palio delle Botti of Gioia del Colle is an annual summer event held in early August that transforms the historic center of Gioia del Colle, in the Metropolitan City of Bari (Puglia), into a grand open-air stage. Organized by the Palio delle Botti Gioia del Colle Association with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the Puglia Region, the festival blends sporting competition, medieval historical re-enactment, and the promotion of the territory's signature wine, Primitivo di Gioia del Colle DOC.
The core of the event is the barrel-rolling race: heavy 225-liter barrels, weighing about 60 kilograms, are pushed by hand by athletes known as "spingitori" along a course winding through the town's streets and squares. Each barrel is entirely hand-painted by an artist and represents a local winery; this is one of the most unique features of the Palio, making it one of the few races where the barrels themselves are true works of art. The competition is fought between the city's districts — the Porte (gates) of the historic center (Porta San Francesco, Porta Maggiore, Porta San Domenico, and Porta Casale) — alongside participating wineries. The winner receives the Cencio, a banner painted each year by a different artist, which the champion winery keeps until the following edition.
Surrounding the race, a true medieval village comes to life. The historical pageant, inspired by Frederick II of Swabia and his court — linked to the history of the famous Norman-Swabian castle of Gioia del Colle — features over a hundred participants in period costumes. Throughout the town, you will encounter flag-wavers, musicians, falconers, jesters, street performers, medieval camps, traditional craft workshops, and artisan markets. There are also activities for children, such as the "Little Pushers Growing Up" race and the "Jesters' Run".
The Palio delle Botti is also a celebration of flavor. The subtitle City of Primitivo Trophy highlights the DOC wine that made Gioia del Colle famous: along the route, you will find food and wine stands and festivals dedicated to the typical products of the Murgia, including rosé wines, cheeses, and local specialties. Concerts and musical performances in the square complete the evenings.
Located between Bari and Taranto, Gioia del Colle is known for its imposing Norman-Swabian castle, one of the most evocative Federician manors in Puglia, and for being a homeland of Primitivo wine. Experiencing the Palio delle Botti means discovering not just the festival, but the historical and gastronomic heritage of this corner of the Murgia plateau.
The Palio delle Botti of Gioia del Colle returns in 2026 for its 9th edition, scheduled for Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd, in the historic center. The event is part of the Joha AeStas 2026 summer program, promoted by the municipal administration between June 28 and September 17.
As per tradition, the two days will feature the painted barrel-rolling race between neighborhoods and wineries, the historical pageant inspired by Frederick II, flag-wavers, falconers, medieval camps, artisan markets, and food stands dedicated to Primitivo wine. At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the detailed program with times and route for the 2026 edition: as soon as it is available, it will be updated on this page.
Gioia del Colle can be reached by car via the SS100 Bari–Taranto road (Gioia del Colle exit). By train, the station is served by the Trenitalia Bari–Taranto line, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center. The nearest airport is Bari–Palese (Karol Wojtyła Airport), approximately 50 km away.
The race and the re-enactment take place in the historic center of Gioia del Colle, with gatherings and performances held in Piazza Plebiscito, Piazza Margherita di Savoia, and the streets of the town center.
Participation in the events along the streets of the center is free and open to the public. During the evenings of the Palio, some streets are closed to traffic; it is advisable to leave your car in the peripheral parking areas and proceed on foot.
