The July Marian feast in the heart of Putignano
In the heart of the Murgia dei Trulli, in Putignano (Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia), the Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most anticipated moments of the summer. The liturgical feast falls on July 16th, but in Putignano, the celebrations are traditionally concentrated in the weekend immediately following, when the Church of the Carmine and the adjacent Municipal Cloister return to being the hub of town life. It is an ancient devotion, linked to the Carmelite Order and the cult of the Virgin who gave the scapular to Saint Simon Stock, which still unites entire generations of Putignano residents today.
The spiritual preparation is long and well-attended: the Marian month of July culminates in the novena, with the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass celebrated every evening in the days leading up to the solemnity. The central days feature morning Masses, the solemn Eucharistic celebration, and, above all, the processions that cross the streets of the historic center with the images of the Madonna del Carmine and Saint Elijah. Local brass bands accompany the pageant, while illuminations light up the churchyard and main streets, creating the typical atmosphere of Apulian patronal feasts.
Alongside the religious rites, the organizing committee offers a rich secular program that transforms squares and streets into meeting places. There is no shortage of concerts (ranging from pop music to nationally renowned groups), theatrical performances, tournaments, raffles, and food stalls where you can taste local specialties, from panzerotti to traditional desserts. It is an opportunity to experience Putignano beyond its famous Carnival, discovering its most authentic and communal side.
Known throughout Italy for its historic Carnival, Putignano offers a different and more intimate image with the Madonna del Carmine Festival: that of a town that, in the heart of summer, gathers around its faith and traditions. For the visitor, it is the ideal occasion to combine popular devotion with the discovery of the historic center, its alleys, and the warm hospitality of Apulia.
For 2026, the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Carmine in Putignano are concentrated on the weekend of July 18-20, with the evening novena (Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM and Holy Mass at 7:30 PM) serving as preparation. Alongside the religious rites, with processions accompanied by local brass bands, there is a secular program that brings theater, music, and Apulian flavors to the square.
During the festival days, food stalls are active, including the "PanzerottiAmoCi" event on Via Roma. Celebrations take place at the Church and the Municipal Cloister of the Carmine, with the San Giovanni Paolo II Hall used for parish activities.
Religious celebrations are held at the Church of the Carmine and the Municipal Cloister, in the historic center of Putignano; the processions travel along the main town streets, while secular events take place in Piazza Teatro and other central spaces.
Putignano is located in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road, taking the exit for Putignano. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Bari. The nearest airport is the Karol Wojtyła Airport in Bari.
Religious celebrations and most secular events in the square are free to attend. It is recommended to check the updated times for Masses and processions at the parish and to arrive early on the evenings of concerts and processions, when crowds are larger.
