The patronal feast of Galatone and the "sparu ti la freccia" rite
In the baroque town of Galatone, in the province of Lecce, Saint Sebastian is venerated as the patron saint and protector against plagues and epidemics. His feast, one of the oldest and most cherished in Salento, is celebrated every year around January 20th, the martyr's liturgical day, with three days of religious rites and secular activities involving the entire historic center. Saint Sebastian, condemned for his Christian faith to be pierced by numerous arrows, is symbolically linked to the most famous and spectacular ritual of the Galatone festival.
The highlight of the festivities is the traditional "sparu ti la freccia" (the shooting of the arrow), a unique spectacle in the landscape of Apulian patronal feasts. A large arrow—about two meters long, made of aluminum and polystyrene—is launched from the Santuario del SS. Crocifisso della Pietà toward a target placed on the festively illuminated clock tower. Suspended on a steel cable and propelled by a series of pyrotechnic charges, the arrow travels about 150-200 meters until it strikes the large bell at the top of the tower. Popular tradition draws a good omen for the new year from the success of the shot: if the arrow hits the target, the year will be prosperous; otherwise, it is an omen to be warded off.
Alongside the arrow rite, the festival preserves all the elements of the great Salento patronal tradition. On the evening of January 19th, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration opens the festivities, followed by the procession with the relic and statue of Saint Sebastian, which winds through the streets of the old town, accompanied by civil and military authorities. There is no shortage of brass band concerts, the spectacular illuminations that light up squares and streets, and the fireworks that conclude the festive evenings.
The scenic heart of the rite is the Santuario del SS. Crocifisso della Pietà, the main monument of Galatone's baroque architecture and one of the greatest 17th-century examples in the province of Lecce. It is from this building, a symbol of the city, that the flaming arrow departs: a blend of devotion, art, and spectacle that makes the Galatone festival unlike any other patronal celebration in Puglia.
Celebrated in the depths of the Salento winter, the Saint Sebastian festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Galatone and its baroque historic center far from the summer tourist season. Between faith, folklore, and popular traditions, it is an event that unites the entire community and attracts visitors from across the province of Lecce.
In 2026, Galatone once again renewed its most iconic patronal feast. On the evening of Monday, January 19th, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration, presided over by the bishop of the diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli and attended by civil and military authorities, kicked off the festivities, followed by the procession with the relic and statue of Saint Sebastian through the streets of the historic center.
The day of Tuesday, January 20th, dedicated to the patron saint, saw a succession of liturgical celebrations, brass band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks, culminating in the highly anticipated "sparu ti la freccia": the large flaming arrow departed from the Santuario del SS. Crocifisso della Pietà, racing along the steel cable toward the clock tower bell under the gaze of thousands of faithful and curious onlookers.
Galatone is located in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. By car, it can be reached via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the Galatone exit. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Lecce-Gallipoli line. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale (about an hour away) and Bari-Palese.
The festivities are concentrated around January 20th, the day of the patron saint, with three days of religious and secular rites.
The festival takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free to attend.
