The major summer patronal feast in the Salento village of Seclì

Every year, between late July and early August, the Municipality of Seclì, a tiny village in the Salento region of Lecce (Apulia), experiences its most intense days with the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, known in the local dialect as Sant'Antoni Grande. It is the town's main patronal feast, distinct from the liturgical feast on June 13th, affectionately called Sant'Antoni Picciccu (the little Saint Anthony). The summer date was established over time specifically to allow emigrants to return to their hometown and honor the Saint of Padua together with the community.
The cult of Saint Anthony in Seclì has roots dating back to the late 16th century, when Guido D'Amato and his wife built a convent and a church dedicated to the Virgin of the Angels. The Friars Minor Observant, who inhabited the convent until the suppression of religious orders in 1866, spread the devotion to the Paduan Saint by establishing an altar dedicated to him. Among the figures linked to this tradition, Friar Francesco da Seclì stands out, a learned religious scholar who in 1637 published an important work in praise of the Saint. Even today, the town preserves numerous votive shrines along the streets and in the countryside, a testament to the deep bond between the community and its protector.
The religious program prepares for the feast with the recitation of the Antonine Rosary and the triduum in the days preceding it, celebrated in the parish church. The most solemn moment is the procession that, on the eve of the feast, winds through the streets of the historic center with the statue of the Saint, accompanied by the sound of the band and greeted by fireworks.
Alongside the sacred rites, the popular celebration unfolds with the typical elements of the great Salento patronal feasts:
The illuminations and fireworks are entrusted to historic local craftsmen, guardians of an art passed down from generation to generation. For a few days, the streets of Seclì are filled with stalls, scents, and music, in an atmosphere that combines faith, celebration, and community identity.
Visiting Seclì during the Sant'Antoni Grande means discovering one of the most authentic corners of inland Salento, far from mass tourism. The village, which also boasts Saint Nicholas as a co-patron, preserves alleys, courtyards, and churches that tell centuries of rural and religious history. The patronal feast is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the popular traditions of the most genuine Apulia.
The 2026 edition of the Sant'Antoni Grande in Seclì (province of Lecce, Apulia) is expected, according to custom, in the last days of July. The precise dates and the detailed program have not yet been released: the official calendar is generally published by the patronal feast committee and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event. It is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Seclì for updates. In keeping with tradition, the festival should include religious rites in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua and the secular celebration with illuminations, bands, music, and fireworks.
Seclì is located in the Salento hinterland, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached from the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the exit for Neviano/Aradeo and continuing towards Seclì. The nearest train station is in Aradeo or Gallipoli (Ferrovie Sud Est), connected to Lecce. The reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, about an hour's drive away.
The patronal feast takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free to attend.
The summer period is ideal for combining the feast with the discovery of nearby Salento destinations, from the Ionian beaches to the villages of Grecìa Salentina. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance in neighboring towns or on the coast.
