The pilgrimage of the 'nuri' and the patronal feast of Avola, in the heart of the Val di Noto
The Saint Sebastian Festival is a cornerstone of identity for the community of Avola, an elegant town known for its unique hexagonal urban layout in the heart of the Val di Noto, in the province of Syracuse. The cult of the Saint dates back to the 15th century: a church dedicated to him is said to have been founded as early as 1449, and over the centuries, the devotion grew to become the city's most attended festival by the second half of the 20th century. The Mother Church, originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, was also consecrated to Saint Sebastian in 1986 and houses the statue of the Saint, a painting of his martyrdom, and a relic donated in 1724.
The most spectacular and defining element is the pilgrimage of the nuri. Early in the morning, devotees set off from the votive shrine of Chiusa di Carlo, along the SS115 road connecting Avola to Syracuse, and reach the Mother Church while chanting invocations to the Saint. In ancient times, pilgrims ran barefoot and half-naked as a sign of humility and penance, hence the name 'nuri' (the naked ones); today, they dress in white, cinched with a red sash tied at the waist, and carry bouquets of carnations and lilies. This ritual transformation is largely credited to Father Antonio Frasca, who in the mid-20th century asked penitents to enter the church fully clothed, encouraging the participation of women and children.
The festival is not limited to the patronal Sunday: in the days leading up to it, Avola hosts a full week of events, including concerts, conferences, book presentations, youth initiatives, and cultural deep-dives, hosted in iconic city venues such as the Teatro Garibaldi, the Municipal Library, and the Town Hall. While the bond with the Saint remains the common thread, the festival opens up to culture and social engagement, involving associations, schools, and citizens alike.
There is also a second commemoration on January 20th, the liturgical feast of the martyr, featuring a suggestive night pilgrimage of the 'nuri' from Mare Vecchio. However, it is the May festival, with its procession of white and red, that draws faithful and visitors to Avola from across the entire province of Syracuse.
The 2026 Saint Sebastian Festival in Avola was celebrated on Sunday, May 10th, the second Sunday of the month, preceded by several days of cultural initiatives. The central moment was the pilgrimage of the nuri, who set off early in the morning from the votive shrine on the SS115 road toward the Mother Church, dressed in white with red sashes and carrying carnations and lilies.
The patronal day followed the traditional schedule: the welcome of the pilgrims and the Mass with city authorities, the auction of devotional gifts on the church parvis, and in the evening, the procession of the statue through the streets of the center, accompanied by the Città di Avola marching band. The festival concluded with the fireworks display and the return of the statue to the Mother Church.
In the preceding days (starting May 7th), the city hosted the usual week of cultural and religious events that open the celebrations in honor of the patron saint.
Avola is located along the southeastern coast of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 highway (Avola exit); it is approximately 25 km from Syracuse. By train, the Avola station is served by the Syracuse-Ragusa-Gela line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The patronal feast takes place on the second Sunday of May, preceded by a week of cultural and religious events. The pilgrimage of the 'nuri' begins early in the morning, around 7:00 AM; the procession and fireworks take place in the evening.
Participation in religious events, the pilgrimage, the procession, and the fireworks display is free. Some cultural events during the week may require a ticket.
