About Saint Sebastian Avola

Every second Sunday of May, Avola, in the province of Syracuse, gathers around its patron saint for the Saint Sebastian Festival. It is one of the most deeply felt traditions in this Baroque town: at dawn, the 'nuri'—dressed in white with red sashes across their chests and carrying bouquets of carnations and lilies—begin their pilgrimage from the votive shrine on the SS115 state road to the Mother Church, invoking the Saint. The day culminates at nightfall with the solemn procession of the statue through the town center and a traditional fireworks display.

A devotion spanning centuries

The Saint Sebastian Festival is a cornerstone of identity for the community of Avola, an elegant town known for its unique hexagonal urban layout in the heart of the Val di Noto, in the province of Syracuse. The cult of the Saint dates back to the 15th century: a church dedicated to him is said to have been founded as early as 1449, and over the centuries, the devotion grew to become the city's most attended festival by the second half of the 20th century. The Mother Church, originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, was also consecrated to Saint Sebastian in 1986 and houses the statue of the Saint, a painting of his martyrdom, and a relic donated in 1724.

The 'nuri', the heart of the festival

The most spectacular and defining element is the pilgrimage of the nuri. Early in the morning, devotees set off from the votive shrine of Chiusa di Carlo, along the SS115 road connecting Avola to Syracuse, and reach the Mother Church while chanting invocations to the Saint. In ancient times, pilgrims ran barefoot and half-naked as a sign of humility and penance, hence the name 'nuri' (the naked ones); today, they dress in white, cinched with a red sash tied at the waist, and carry bouquets of carnations and lilies. This ritual transformation is largely credited to Father Antonio Frasca, who in the mid-20th century asked penitents to enter the church fully clothed, encouraging the participation of women and children.

A week of celebrations

The festival is not limited to the patronal Sunday: in the days leading up to it, Avola hosts a full week of events, including concerts, conferences, book presentations, youth initiatives, and cultural deep-dives, hosted in iconic city venues such as the Teatro Garibaldi, the Municipal Library, and the Town Hall. While the bond with the Saint remains the common thread, the festival opens up to culture and social engagement, involving associations, schools, and citizens alike.

Traditions and atmosphere

  • Auction of gifts: On the church parvis, devotional gifts offered by merchants and the faithful are auctioned off.
  • Procession of the statue: At nightfall, the statue of the Saint is carried through the streets of the center, accompanied by the Città di Avola marching band.
  • Fireworks display: Fireworks close the day, lighting up the sky before the statue returns to the Mother Church.
  • Tradition for children: Children are given a small tambourine, accompanied by a holy card of the Saint and a red ribbon.

There is also a second commemoration on January 20th, the liturgical feast of the martyr, featuring a suggestive night pilgrimage of the 'nuri' from Mare Vecchio. However, it is the May festival, with its procession of white and red, that draws faithful and visitors to Avola from across the entire province of Syracuse.
