About Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga

Every first Sunday of August, Rosolini in the province of Syracuse pays homage to its Patron Saint with the Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a tradition dating back to 1754. Three intense days weave together faith and popular celebration: the solemn procession of the Saint's statue through the historic center, accompanied by the "V. Bellini" marching band, the Eucharistic celebration in Piazza Garibaldi, musical and theatrical performances, food and wine festivals, and traditional fireworks lighting up the Sicilian night.

A patronal feast in the heart of south-eastern Sicily

The Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Rosolini, a town on the Iblean plateau in the province of Syracuse, in the south-eastern tip of Sicily. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga has been venerated as the Patron Saint of Rosolini since 1754, and his feast, traditionally held on the first Sunday of August, has marked the town's summer for centuries, drawing back many locals who emigrated but return for the occasion.

The procession of the statue

The highlight is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, which winds through the historic center on Sunday evening amidst crowds, candles, and devotional chants. The parade begins in Piazza Garibaldi following the Eucharistic celebration, proceeding along Corso Savoia, Via Bellini, Via Immacolata, Via Eloro, Via Roma, and other town streets, accompanied by the notes of the "V. Bellini" marching band. The participation of the faithful, local authorities, and confraternities gives the day an atmosphere of intense popular religiosity.

Three days of faith and entertainment

Alongside the religious program, the festival offers three days packed with cultural, musical, and gastronomic events. The celebration traditionally opens on Friday with a parade through the town streets featuring Sicilian carts, musicians, flag-wavers, and folk groups, while the following evenings feature theatrical comedies, musical shows, and entertainment for all ages.

  • Inaugural parade with Sicilian carts and folk groups
  • Eucharistic celebration and procession of the statue
  • Musical performances and theatrical comedies in the square
  • Food festivals and tastings of typical Iblean products
  • Final fireworks display

Local flavors

The program highlights the products of the Iblean land: in recent editions, the festival has been accompanied by the Carob Festival, dedicated to one of the iconic fruits of local agriculture, offering a chance to rediscover traditional sweets, syrups, and recipes from Rosolini's farming heritage. The evenings often conclude with fireworks that frame the sky of Rosolini in honor of the Patron Saint.

A renewed identity

Organized by the Municipality of Rosolini in collaboration with the local Pro Loco, the Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is a meeting point for the entire community and a showcase of the popular traditions of south-eastern Sicily, blending devotion, music, and conviviality.

Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga is expected for the first days of August, following the tradition that sets the patronal feast of Rosolini on the first Sunday of the month. As of now, the official dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Rosolini. The usual traditional events are confirmed: the procession of the statue of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the Eucharistic celebration, and the civil festivities in the historic center.

The festivities in honor of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, Patron Saint of Rosolini, are also expected in 2026 during the first days of August, according to the tradition that places the patronal feast on the first Sunday of the month.
