The sea procession of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption in the Porto Grande of Syracuse, every August 15th

On August 15th, the day of the Assumption of Mary and the Ferragosto holiday, Syracuse celebrates one of the most beloved events in its religious and popular calendar: the sea procession of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The event centers on the Church of San Filippo Apostolo, located in the charming Jewish quarter of Giudecca in the heart of Ortigia island, and culminates in the waters of the Porto Grande, the historic stretch of water that has always linked the city to the Mediterranean.
The solemnity of the Assumption celebrates the dogma proclaimed in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, according to which the Virgin Mary, having completed her earthly life, was assumed into heaven body and soul. In Syracuse, this devotion is intertwined with the city's maritime culture: the blessing of the sea and the prayer for those lost at sea make the festival a moment of reflection for the families of fishermen and sailors, as well as a celebration of the community.
In the afternoon, following liturgical celebrations and the Holy Rosary, around 7:00 PM the statue leaves the Church of San Filippo Apostolo and is carried on the shoulders of the confreres along the streets and squares of the historic center of Ortigia, including Piazza San Filippo, Via Roma, Piazza Minerva, Piazza Duomo, and Largo Porta Marina, accompanied by the notes of the brass band.
The sea procession of the Assumption is much more than a religious celebration: it is a rite of identity that draws locals and visitors to the docks of the Porto Grande every year. The scenery of Ortigia at sunset, the illuminated boats, the fireworks, and the statue moving across the water create a scene of rare beauty, an authentic expression of the popular traditions and folklore of the province of Syracuse, in Sicily.
Organized by the Confraternity of the Immaculate with the support of the parish community, the festival is faithfully renewed every August 15th, weaving together devotion, memory, and love for the sea on one of the hottest and brightest days of the Sicilian summer.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Assumption in Syracuse is expected for the usual appointment on August 15th. As of the writing of this page, the official times and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The celebration traditionally follows the same pattern: liturgical celebrations in the Church of San Filippo Apostolo, departure of the statue in the late afternoon, procession along the streets of Ortigia, sea procession in the Porto Grande with the blessing of the sea and prayer for those lost at sea, fireworks display, and evening return.
Every year on August 15th (Ferragosto, Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary). The main events take place from late afternoon until evening, with the sea procession around 8:00 PM.
