Noto's grand patronal feast on the last Sunday of August
On the last Sunday of August, the city of Noto—the capital of Sicilian Baroque and a UNESCO World Heritage site in the heart of the Val di Noto, in the province of Syracuse—hosts its most significant event: the San Corrado Confalonieri Festival. Known as the "summer" edition to distinguish it from the winter celebration on February 19th, this is the primary feast the Noto community dedicates to its Patron Saint, drawing numerous pilgrims from across Sicily.
Corrado Confalonieri (1290-1351) was a nobleman from Piacenza who, after renouncing all his wealth, arrived in Sicily and lived as a hermit in a cave near ancient Noto, in an area now known as the "Valley of Miracles." Venerated for his penance, humility, and charity—the "miracle of the loaves" during a 14th-century famine is particularly famous—he was named the patron saint of Noto in 1643. The festival on the last Sunday of August commemorates his beatification.
The most evocative moment is the procession of the silver urn containing the Saint's relics. The 16th-century ark, decorated with images of the twelve Apostles, is carried on the shoulders of the bearers through the streets of the historic center. The procession is led by the Confraternities and the characteristic "cilii", large votive candles supported by wooden frames depicting scenes from the Saint's life. This tradition dates back to 1620, when there were only two candles; their number has grown over the years to over a dozen, becoming highly coveted by noble families as a sign of prestige.
At the heart of the popular devotion is the "viaggio scausu", or the barefoot journey: many faithful walk barefoot from their homes to the city center as a vow to the Patron Saint. During the summer edition, the bearers wear amaranth-colored polo shirts—the colors of Noto—with black trousers and shoes.
Alongside the religious events, the festival features the traditional San Corrado Fair, set up in the Villa Comunale with market stalls, local products, and games, followed by music in the square and a grand fireworks display that concludes the festivities. On the following Sunday, the octave of the feast, a second procession of the Patron Saint takes place in the afternoon.
The summer San Corrado Festival is much more than a religious celebration: it is the moment when the entire community of Noto reconnects with its roots through devotion, tradition, and the unique atmosphere of the Baroque center. For visitors, it is also the perfect opportunity to discover the stunning backdrops of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Cathedral, and the city's late-Baroque palaces.
The 2026 Summer San Corrado Confalonieri Festival will be held in Noto on Sunday, August 30, 2026, on the last Sunday of the month as per tradition. Once again, the Baroque city will celebrate its Patron Saint with the procession of the silver urn, accompanied by the Confraternities, the characteristic cilii, and the devotees of the viaggio scausu, in addition to the San Corrado Fair in the Villa Comunale and traditional fireworks. The full calendar of religious and secular events will be announced by the organizers closer to the date.
Noto is accessible by car via the SS115; the nearest motorway exit is on the A18/E45 (Cassibile). The Noto railway station is connected to the Syracuse-Ragusa line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 90 km away).
The last Sunday of August. The procession takes place in the afternoon in the historic center; fireworks close the evening.
Admission to the festivities and the Fair is free. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot along the procession route and booking accommodation well in advance during the high summer season.
