The patronal feast of Avola: a week of faith, processions, and events in the heart of the Val di Noto
The Feast of Saint Venera is the most cherished event of the summer in Avola, a Baroque town in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of the Val di Noto. Saint Venera, a virgin and martyr, has been the city's patron saint since 1647. Every year, in the final week of July, a festival is held in her honor, uniting religious, civil, and popular dimensions and involving the entire community.
At the heart of the devotion is the artistic wooden statue of the saint, kept in the Church of Saint Venera in Piazza Teatro, an 18th-century building whose construction began in 1713. The exquisite statue is covered in embossed and chased silver sheets, a testament to fine Sicilian craftsmanship. The church also houses an oval painting depicting the "Preaching of Saint Venera".
The festivities extend beyond the religious day: in the days leading up to the last Sunday of July, Avola comes alive with a dense program as part of the "Avola Summer" calendar. Concerts are held in the town squares, alongside theatrical and comedy shows, workshops for children, book presentations, art exhibitions, and sporting events such as the historic Saint Venera Cup, a cycling race now in its seventh decade.
The highlight is the solemn procession: on Sunday, the city is awakened by the traditional pyrotechnic "diana," the ringing of bells, and the marches of the town bands. In the evening, the statue leaves the church in Piazza Teatro and travels through the historic center amidst prayers, hymns, and the accompaniment of the Avola Town Band, with lighting effects that make the scene even more evocative. The following Monday, the festivities continue with musical performances and conclude with a grand fireworks display. The festival finds its epilogue with the sea procession of the Octave, when the statue is carried onto the waters of Avola in a rite that binds the city to its maritime tradition.
Attending the Feast of Saint Venera means experiencing the most authentic soul of Avola and south-eastern Sicily: a free, widespread event capable of combining the charm of the Val di Noto Baroque, popular spirituality, and the joy of summer evenings in the square.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Venera in Avola (Syracuse) will take place during the last week of July, with the main day falling on the last Sunday of the month, July 26, 2026. The festival will follow the traditional format: a week of cultural, musical, and sporting events preceding the solemn religious procession of the patron saint's statue, accompanied by the town band and fireworks, and the subsequent sea procession of the Octave.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: the Municipality of Avola and the Parish of Saint Venera will release it in the weeks leading up to the festival. This page will be updated with the complete schedule as soon as it is made official.
