The patronal feast of Canicattini Bagni, blending faith, 'nzareddi, and fireworks
The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the religious and cultural heart of Canicattini Bagni, a town on the Iblei plateau in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. Every year on September 29th, the entire town pauses to honor its patron saint in a day that blends solemn celebrations, ancient rites, and moments of great collective joy. It is one of the most defining traditions of the Iblei territory, drawing locals, returning emigrants, and curious visitors to the historic center.
The most anticipated moment is the "Sciuta", the triumphant exit of the Archangel's statue. Housed in the chapel of the Mother Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the statue is carried out at noon, following the Solemn Mass, and greeted on the church steps by the characteristic shower of 'nzareddi โ ribbons of colorful paper โ and the roar of fireworks, amidst the cheers of the faithful. Placed on a float, it is then carried on shoulders in a procession through the town streets.
In the evening, a second procession renews the devotion: the statue leaves the church once more, greeted by the firing of 'nzareddi and the release of lanterns, before parading on a triumphal carriage accompanied by civil and military authorities and a large crowd.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival is a spectacle. In the square, the City of Canicattini Bagni Band performs symphonic marches, joined by drum groups and flag-wavers, while folk music concerts take place. The day invariably concludes with a grand fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Iblei plateau.
Devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel is deeply rooted in the history of Canicattini Bagni, a city that saw significant development after the devastating 1893 Val di Noto earthquake that shook the entire Iblei region. The community links the patron's figure to ancient stories of miracles and a faith passed down through generations. In addition to the religious feast, the summer period also features the Palio of Saint Michael, a re-enactment of late 19th-century customs with a parade of the eight historic districts, Sicilian carts, local food festivals, and traditional games like the "donkey race" and tug-of-war.
