The night of the district fires in Accadia, in the heart of the Monti Dauni

In the heart of winter, when the Daunian Sub-Apennines are wrapped in cold and often snow, the village of Accadia, in the province of Foggia, transforms into a grand stage of fire. The Saint Sebastian Bonfire Palio is one of the most deeply felt identity-defining events in the Monti Dauni: around January 20th, the day dedicated to the patron saint, the town's districts ignite enormous woodpiles and compete for the palio for the most beautiful and impressive bonfire.
The festival unites the religious and popular dimensions. The day is marked by the procession of Saint Sebastian and the solemn blessing of the torches, which signals the lighting of the district bonfires. Each neighborhood works for weeks on gathering and building its own woodpile: the competition, more than a challenge, is a collective gesture of belonging and connection to the ancient roots of the territory. Around the fires, groups of people gather, dining by the light of the flames and renewing the spirit of community that characterizes the small villages of Daunia.
Each bonfire is accompanied by an area dedicated to tastings of typical Accadia dishes: mixed vegetables with beans, boiled potatoes, chickpeas with polenta, small pizzas, fritters, and sausages, all paired with Primitivo wine. Folk music, with groups like Luna Janara and wandering ensembles that enliven the town streets, accompanies the long evening until the awarding of the winning districts.
Nestled at an altitude of about 650 meters in the Daunian Sub-Apennines, Accadia is famous for the evocative Rione Fossi, the ancient village with houses carved into the rock, a historical memory of the community. Over the years, the event has become a showcase for promoting the territory and slow tourism linked to folklore, tradition, and the gastronomic quality of the Monti Dauni. Since 2008, the festival has also been twinned with the famous Fracchie of San Marco in Lamis, another great fire ritual in the province of Foggia.
Accadia's bond with Saint Sebastian is rooted in ancient devotion, and the bonfire ritual renews the symbolic purifying value of fire every year. In 2025, the Palio reached its 40th edition, involving local schools and associations in educational activities designed to reconnect new generations with the cultural heritage of the Municipality of Accadia and the entire Puglia Region.
The Municipality of Accadia has not yet released the official program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Sebastian Bonfire Palio. As per tradition, the festival is linked to the patron saint's day on January 20th and includes the procession, the blessing of the torches, and the lighting of the district bonfires, with tastings of typical dishes and folk music. Dates and details will be updated as soon as they are made public.
Accadia can be reached by car via the SS655 Bradanica and the roads of the Monti Dauni; the nearest motorway exit is Candela (A16 Naples-Canosa), about 25 km away. The reference railway stations are those on the line to Foggia, the provincial capital.
The event is traditionally held around January 20th, the feast of Saint Sebastian. The blessing of the torches takes place in the evening, and the bonfires remain lit until late at night.
The event takes place outdoors in the middle of winter at a hilly altitude: heavy clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for moving between the various district bonfires in the historic center. Admission is free.
