The patronal feast of Accadia, in the heart of the Daunian Sub-Apennines

The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the most anticipated event in the calendar of Accadia, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants perched on the slopes of the Daunian Sub-Apennines, in the western part of the province of Foggia. Every year, traditionally on the fourth Sunday of September, the village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, popular traditions, and secular festivities, involving the entire Daunia community and many Accadia emigrants who return home specifically for this occasion.
Saint Vitus the Martyr is among the most beloved saints in Southern Italy: his figure is linked to protection against illness and danger, and he is venerated in numerous towns across Puglia, from Polignano a Mare to the villages of the Tavoliere and the Daunian Mountains. In Accadia, his feast does not fall on June 15th, the saint's liturgical date, but is celebrated in autumn, at the end of September, when the community gathers at the end of the agricultural season to give thanks and renew an identity bond passed down through generations.
The festivities combine sacred and secular elements, following the typical pattern of patronal feasts in the Daunian Sub-Apennines:
Accadia is located in an area of great scenic charm, among the villages of the Daunian Mountains, dominated by the evocative Rione Fossi, the ancient district carved into the rock. The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of inland Puglia, far from mass tourism routes, where religious and rural traditions are still alive and the community finds itself in its collective rites. The Municipality of Accadia promotes the festival together with the committee and local confraternities, in a calendar that throughout the year also includes other heartfelt events, such as the feast of Saint Sebastian in January and the Madonna del Carmine in August.
Those who visit Accadia during the patronal feast experience a genuine atmosphere made of faith, music, flavors, and hospitality. It is a small but significant village event, where the spirituality of the procession coexists with the joy of the fair and the illuminations, and where the hospitality of the Daunia people is expressed in all its simplicity.
For the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr in Accadia, the official program has not yet been released. Following tradition, the festivities in honor of the patron saint should take place towards the end of September in the historic center of the town, with the usual solemn masses, the procession with the saint's statue, the brass band concert, artistic illuminations, fireworks, musical entertainment, and the market fair with Daunia food stalls. The dates and the full calendar will be announced by the Municipality of Accadia and the organizing committee closer to the event.
Accadia is located in the Daunian Sub-Apennines, in the province of Foggia (Puglia). By car, it can be reached from the Candela motorway exit (A16 Naples-Bari), continuing along the provincial roads of the Daunian Mountains. The nearest train station is Foggia, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The festival is traditionally held on the fourth Sunday of September in the historic center of Accadia.
Participation in the festivities and the procession is free of charge.
Accommodation facilities are concentrated in nearby towns and in Foggia: it is advisable to book in advance. Don't miss a walk through the evocative Rione Fossi and a taste of typical Daunia products at the food stalls.
