Novena, blessing of the roses, and solemn procession in honor of the patron saint of impossible causes
Every year, between May 13th and 22nd, Avellino experiences one of the most intense moments of its religious and popular calendar: the Festival of Saint Rita of Cascia, the saint whom popular devotion invokes as the patron of impossible and desperate causes. The heart of the celebration is the Church of San Francesco Saverio, which everyone in the city calls simply the "Church of Saint Rita," located in the historic center of the Irpinian capital, just a stone's throw from the Cathedral.
Ritiana devotion in Avellino has been passed down in this church for nearly a hundred years. Before the statue currently carried in procession was made, the faithful venerated another effigy of the saint kept in the Church of San Generoso. The building on Via San Francesco Saverio has 18th-century origins: the original structure dates back to 1752, and an internal plaque commemorates the solemn rite celebrated in 1801 by Bishop Sebastiano De Rosa for the reconstruction of the church from its foundations, made possible by the offerings of the faithful.
The festivities open on May 13th with the beginning of the traditional novena, nine days of prayer that accompany the city until the liturgical memorial on the 22nd. During the novena, one of the rites dearest to Irpinian families takes place: the consecration of children to Saint Rita, with the little ones brought to the altar by their parents.
On the eve of the festival, following the floral tribute from the San Pellegrino Martire pilgrims, the most recognizable rite of Ritiana devotion is celebrated: the blessing of the roses, which are then handed one by one to the faithful. The red rose with its thorns is the symbol of Rita of Cascia and recalls the rose that bloomed in the snow in the garden of the saint's birthplace. For the occasion, the church fills well beyond its capacity.
The day of the memorial is marked by a long sequence of Eucharistic celebrations that begins at 6:00 AM and continues throughout the day. At noon, after the pontifical mass presided over by the Bishop of Avellino, the supplication to Saint Rita is recited: this is the moment when the church and the churchyard fill with people who have arrived from neighboring towns as well.
At 6:30 PM, the statue of the saint leaves the church on Via San Francesco Saverio for the solemn procession, the most awaited moment. The pageant crosses Via Del Gaizo, Via Amabile, Via Del Balzo, Via Circumvallazione, Via Colombo, Via De Conciliis, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Libertà, Via Nappi, Via Duomo, and Rampa San Modestino, before returning to the church. The statue is accompanied by confraternities, religious and civil authorities, and thousands of citizens: families, the elderly, and young people from the various districts of Avellino and the surrounding hinterland.
Rita of Cascia is traditionally invoked by unhappily married women and those facing dead-end situations: she responded to the violence suffered within her family, the killing of her husband, and the death of her children by choosing reconciliation over revenge. It is this story, even more than the ritual, that explains why her festival unites the entire city every year, transcending social differences. "Saint Rita teaches us that if we follow Jesus, everything becomes possible," recalled Father Antonio Dente, rector of the church.
In the Municipality of Avellino's calendar, the Saint Rita Festival is one of the most attended events in the capital. For those visiting inland Campania in May, it is an authentic opportunity to observe Irpinian popular religiosity up close, far from the tourist circuits of the coast: a rite that, as the local press writes, has the power to unite the entire city.
The 2026 Saint Rita Festival in Avellino took place from May 13th to 22nd at the Church of San Francesco Saverio, in the historic center of the Irpinian capital. The novena, which began on May 13th, accompanied the city through nine days of prayer, including the consecration of children to Saint Rita, one of the rites dearest to Avellino families.
On the eve of the festival, after the floral tribute from the San Pellegrino Martire pilgrims, the roses were blessed and then distributed one by one to the faithful, according to the Ritiana tradition recalling the rose that bloomed in the snow.
Friday, May 22nd, the day of the liturgical memorial, saw Eucharistic celebrations follow one another starting at 6:00 AM and continuing throughout the day; at noon, after the pontifical mass presided over by the Bishop of Avellino, the supplication to Saint Rita was recited. The church was filled from the early hours with thousands of faithful who had also arrived from neighboring towns: families, the elderly, and young people from the city's various districts.
At 6:30 PM, the statue of the saint left the church on Via San Francesco Saverio for the solemn procession through the streets of the center, accompanied by confraternities, religious and civil authorities, and a crowd of citizens. The local press described the edition as one of the most attended, "a rite capable of uniting the city."
Avellino can be reached by car via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Avellino Ovest and Avellino Est exits) and the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction; bus connections are available from Naples. The Church of San Francesco Saverio is located on the street of the same name, in the historic center, a few steps from the Cathedral and Piazza Libertà.
All celebrations and the procession are free to attend. On May 22nd, Eucharistic celebrations begin at 6:00 AM, the supplication to Saint Rita is recited at noon after the Bishop's pontifical mass, and the procession departs at 6:30 PM from the church.
On the day of the festival, the center of Avellino may be subject to temporary traffic changes along the procession route: it is advisable to leave your car in the outer parking lots and reach the center on foot. Those wishing to receive a blessed rose must attend the vigil celebration on May 21st.
