December 6th in Presenzano, featuring solemn mass and the traditional distribution of panelle

Every year, on the day the Church commemorates Saint Nicholas of Bari, the Municipality of Presenzano, in the province of Caserta (Campania), gathers to honor its patron saint. This patronal feast is not a large-scale tourist attraction; rather, it is a heartfelt community tradition that has always marked the beginning of winter in this village of just over 1,500 residents, overlooking the Volturno plain at an altitude of approximately 270 meters.
The invitation is simple and direct: the Municipality welcomes everyone to take part in the celebrations and the traditional distribution of panelle, the most anticipated and iconic moment of the entire festival.
The services take place in the SS. Annunziata Church, located in Piazza ai Caduti, a Renaissance-era building later remodeled in the 19th century with Neo-Gothic features. The church belongs to the Saint Nicholas parish of Presenzano, within the Diocese of Teano-Calvi, and was fully returned to worship in June 2022 following extensive restoration work begun in 2020 and supported by the Italian Episcopal Conference through 8xmille funds. On that occasion, Bishop Giacomo Cirulli celebrated the reopening mass and consecrated the existing altar.
Inside, the church houses large canvases dedicated to the mystery of the Annunciation and ancient paintings in the four segments of the apse vault, making it one of the most significant artistic sites in the village.
The distribution of panelle is the element that most defines the Presenzano Saint Nicholas celebration and is explicitly highlighted in the municipal notices. It is a ritual of sharing that takes place between the church and the square after the services: a simple, free gesture that binds different generations together and serves as a reason for many emigrants to return home for the occasion.
Devotion to Saint Nicholas of Bari is widespread throughout Southern Italy, particularly along the ancient routes that connected the Terra di Lavoro to the Adriatic. In Presenzano, the saint gives his name to the parish and the Romanesque Church of Saint Nicholas, a three-aisled structure that stands as one of the village's historical monuments, alongside the ruins of the medieval castle of Norman origin and the 17th-century Ducal Palace.
Visitors arriving for the feast will find a cozy village dominated by the fortress, offering sweeping views of the valley and the Matese massif. Nearby, the archaeological remains of ancient Rufrae, including the ruins of the amphitheater, tell the long history of this corner of inland Campania. A visit to the historic center on the afternoon of December 6th pairs perfectly with the evening celebrations.
Specific dates and programs are announced annually by the parish and published on the official website of the Municipality of Presenzano, typically in the weeks leading up to the event.
At the time of writing, the Municipality of Presenzano (province of Caserta, Campania) has not yet published the dates and program for the 2026 patronal feast in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari. This is standard practice: notices regarding the celebration are released closer to the event, once the parish has finalized the liturgical calendar.
Based on local tradition and the 2025 edition, the feast is expected to take place around December 6th, the saint's liturgical day, with services at the SS. Annunziata Church in Piazza ai Caduti and the traditional distribution of panelle. However, none of these details are currently confirmed by official sources for 2026.
For updated information, please refer to the official website of the Municipality of Presenzano or contact the SS. Annunziata Church directly.
By train: The Tora-Presenzano station, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, is about 7 km from the town center; the final leg must be completed by car or local transport services.
By car: The municipal area is crossed by the SS6 Via Casilina and the SS85 Venafrana, connecting Presenzano with Caianello, Vairano Patenora, and Venafro. The historic village is reached via an uphill road: it is best to park in the designated spaces at the entrance to the village and continue on foot to Piazza ai Caduti.
Participation in the celebrations and the distribution of panelle is free. Services are concentrated in the late afternoon and evening; it is advisable to arrive a little early, as the church is not large.

It is December at an altitude of 270 meters: it gets cold in the evening, so warm clothing is recommended. Nearby, you can combine your visit with the castle ruins, the Romanesque Church of Saint Nicholas, and the archaeological site of ancient Rufrae.
