About Saint Nicholas Feast

Every December 6th, the small town of Capriglia Irpina, overlooking the Sabato Valley in the province of Avellino, gathers to celebrate its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari. The Patronal Feast blends the solemnity of the Mother Church with the warmth of a local celebration: morning prayers, the Family Rosary, a solemn Mass, a brass band in the square, gifts for children, a procession with the sacred effigy through the town center, and fireworks to conclude the day. It is the most cherished event of the year for the local community, attracting devotees from neighboring towns.

The most cherished day of the year in Capriglia Irpina

On December 6th, the Municipality of Capriglia Irpinaโ€”a town of just over two thousand residents in the province of Avellino, Campaniaโ€”celebrates its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari. This day is the focal point of the local calendar: families return to Irpinia, and the village, nestled on the slopes of the Partenio mountains overlooking the Sabato valley, gathers around the Mother Church. The feast also draws devotees from the surrounding towns in the Avellino area.

A long-standing devotion

The cult of Saint Nicholas in Capriglia dates back to the early Middle Ages. The current Church of Saint Nicholas, located on the square of the same name in the heart of the historic center, dates to the mid-16th century and was built over a pre-existing 10th-century chapel dedicated to the same saint. The exterior walls and bell tower still feature reused Roman materials, including funerary stelae embedded in the masonryโ€”a detail that speaks volumes about the historical stratification of this corner of Irpinia.

Inside, the building features two side aisles, three altars on each side, and a high altar in polychrome marble of remarkable sculptural quality. This is where the celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint begin each year.

How the day unfolds

The Capriglia patronal feast is an intense, one-day event rather than a multi-day festival. Everything is concentrated on the liturgical date of December 6th, alternating between moments of prayer and public festivities. The program of a recent edition illustrates the day's rhythm:

  • Morning โ€” Morning Lauds prayer in the Mother Church, led by the parish priest.
  • Noon โ€” Angelus and blessing in Piazza San Nicola, featuring a brass band performance and Christmas carols; children receive traditional gift bags.
  • Afternoon โ€” Family Holy Rosary, animated and meditated upon by the religious sisters present in the parish.
  • Evening โ€” Solemn Holy Mass with a guest celebrant, followed by the procession with the sacred effigy of Saint Nicholas through the town streets: starting from the Mother Church, moving along Via Belvedere and Via Roma, and returning to the Mother Church.
  • Finale โ€” A fireworks display, eagerly awaited as the true seal of the feast.

Alongside the religious aspect, there is a strong popular dimension: Christmas decorations in the historic center, music, and the distribution of traditional sweets and local products, following the custom of charity in honor of the Saint.

Saint Nicholas, the saint of children

For visitors, it is worth noting why December 6th is such a popular date in Southern Italy. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra and later patron of Bari, is the saint of generosity. From the legends of him secretly gifting dowries to poor girls comes the tradition of giving gifts to children, which in many Southern communities precedes Christmas by a few weeks. In Capriglia, this tradition remains alive through the gift bags handed out to children at noon in front of the church.

Capriglia Irpina beyond the feast

The town is part of the Partenio Regional Park, and its name is linked to the noble Capriolo family, who resided there until the 18th century. Pietro Carafa, later Pope Paul IV, is said to have been born in Capriglia in 1476, and Palazzo Carafa preserves his memory. The 16th-century churches of Sant'Antonio and San Felice are also worth a visit.

Gastronomically, this is a land of excellence: the Mortarella Hazelnut (the town is a member of the 'Cittร  della Nocciola' association), Fiano di Avellino wine, and acacia, chestnut, and wildflower honeys. The local calendar also features other traditional events: the Zeza di Capriglia, a historic carnival farce of Irpinian folklore; the feast of San Felice in May; the September food festival; and the living nativity scene during the Christmas season.

Why visit

Those seeking an authentic patronal feast, far from large tourist crowds, will find a community living its traditions without filters: a square that fills up, a band playing, a procession winding through alleys and viewpoints with the Partenio mountains in the background, and a December sky lit up by fireworks. A half-day in Irpinia that is well worth the trip from Avellino or Naples.
