February 14th in Mercogliano: the Lumanera of Capocastello and the great bonfire at the foot of the funicular
In Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, February 14th is not just a date on the liturgical calendar: it is the day the entire community gathers around the fire. The Saint Modestino Feast, the town's patron saint, combines religious celebrations with the oldest of Irpinian traditions, the Focarone, the great bonfire that burns in the winter night as a sign of good's victory over evil. It is one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in Irpinia, capable of drawing residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns in just a few hours.
Mercogliano does not venerate just one patron saint, but three: Modestino, Fiorentino, and Flaviano, martyrs of the early Christian centuries who, according to tradition, met their deaths in the Mercogliano territory during the Christianization of Irpinia. Their relics, rediscovered in the 12th century, made Saint Modestino the patron saint of the city of Avellino as well: hence the bondโand the friendly rivalryโthat unites the two centers every year on the same feast day. In Mercogliano, however, the devotion remains deeply popular, rooted in the alleys and districts rather than in the large squares.
The most authentic heart of the day beats in Capocastello, the ancient village perched above the town. Here, the A' Lumanera - Capocastello Association preserves and passes down the rite of the Lumanera: Holy Mass in honor of the Patron Saints in the church of the Immaculate Conception, followed by the blessing and lighting of the woodpile. Families from the village bring brushwood, people sing, and wine and local products are offered, filling the small square with people until late in the evening. Once, the ashes from the fire were scattered on the fields: it was believed they would bring luck to the harvest of hazelnuts and grapes, the two great crops of this part of the Partenio. The Lumanera is thus, at the same time, a Christian rite and the survival of an ancient agricultural gesture.
A few hours later, the fire descends to the valley. In the Montevergine Funicular square, along Viale San Modestino, the Focarone is lit: the flame illuminates the square and the bronze statue of Saint Modestino, restored and relocated in the adjacent gardens. It is the most photographed moment of the feast, with the silhouette of the Partenio in the background and the community gathered around the flames. In Avellino, on the same day, a focarone is also lit in front of the cathedral after the blessing of the wooden logs: two twin fires for the same saint.
With just over 12,000 inhabitants, the Municipality of Mercogliano is the gateway to the Montevergine Sanctuary, one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites in Campania, reachable by the historic funicular that climbs the mountainside in about seven minutes. The town is part of the Partenio Regional Park and preserves a remarkable heritage: the Loreto Abbey Palace, the antiquarium of Capocastello, and the medieval alleys of the upper village. Coming here on February 14th means seeing the Campania Region in its most intimate and least touristy dimension, that of village rites that resist the passage of time.
It is not a festival built for the public: it is a festival the town holds for itself, and for this very reason, it is precious. Those who arrive find a simple welcome, the warmth of the fire, the scent of wood and chestnuts, and the feeling of participating in something that has repeated itself identically for centuries. A free, outdoor, evening event, ideal for those seeking authentic Irpinia in the middle of winter.
On Saturday, February 14th, 2026, Mercogliano renewed its appointment with its patron saints. The day opened with religious celebrations in the town's parishes and the blessing of the statue of Saint Modestino in the funicular square, in the presence of the Abbot of Montevergine, Father Riccardo Guariglia, and the priests of the city parishes.
In the late afternoon, the fire was lit in Capocastello, where the A' Lumanera Association preserves the Lumanera rite: blessing and lighting of the woodpile, folk songs, wine, and local products shared by the village families. In the evening, it was time for the Focarone in the Montevergine funicular square, on Viale San Modestino, the most attended moment of the feast.
On the same day, Avellino, which shares the patron saint with Mercogliano, also celebrated Saint Modestino with masses in the cathedral, the blessing of wooden logs, and the lighting of its own focarone: two twin fires, a few kilometers apart, for the same Irpinian devotion.
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit Avellino Ovest, then SS 374 towards Mercogliano (about 5 km). From Naples, the journey takes about an hour. By train: Avellino station, then AIR Campania bus to Mercogliano. The Montevergine funicular departs from Viale San Modestino, where the Focarone is lit.
Parking areas in the funicular square and along Viale San Modestino. For the Lumanera of Capocastello, it is advisable to leave the car below and walk up: the ancient village has narrow alleys and little room for maneuvering.
Free and open participation in all moments of the feast, both religious and civil. Tastings of wine and local products are generally offered by the association and residents.
You will be outdoors in February, in the hills: wear warm clothing, comfortable and non-slip shoes for the stone alleys of Capocastello. Arrive early to find a spot around the fire. Those staying for several days can combine the visit with the Montevergine Sanctuary and the Loreto Abbey Palace.
