Faith, music, and gastronomy in the Virbo district of Monopoli
Every year in mid-May, the Virbo district of Monopoli, in the heart of the southeastern Bari countryside, comes alive for the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, one of the most deeply rooted traditions among the Monopoli districts. For two days, religious devotion to the patron saint intertwines with a sense of community, music, and fine food, creating a festive atmosphere that engages not only the residents of Virbo but also those from the nearby Barcato district and visitors from all over Monopoli and neighboring towns.
The event is organized by the San Michele Virbo Festival Committee, which oversees both the religious and secular programs each year, keeping alive a tradition that unites multiple generations of the district.
The true gastronomic heart of the event is the Panzerotto and Pettole Festival, now in its fortieth year. The fried panzerotto, with its golden dough filled with tomato and melted mozzarella, and the pettole, soft balls of leavened dough fried on the spot, are the specialties that draw long queues to the stands every evening. It is the simple, honest cuisine of the Apulian tradition, served in the most authentic way: piping hot, straight from the oil, at tables set up in the district.
The most solemn moment is the procession with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which travels through the streets of the Virbo and Barcato districts, accompanied by faithful followers in prayer and the notes of the brass band. On Sunday, Holy Mass and the procession mark the spiritual side of the festival, while the evenings are dedicated to live music, with folk groups and bands enlivening the district until late. The festivities inevitably close with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the Monopoli countryside.
Monopoli, overlooking the Adriatic in the province of Bari, is not just about its splendid historic center and port: its identity also lives in the numerous inland districts, each with its own patronal feast. The San Michele festival in Virbo is among the most well-known, thanks to the combination of faith and gastronomic festival, making it a perfect opportunity to discover the most genuine side of Apulia, characterized by traditional flavors and vibrant, close-knit rural communities.
During the weekend of May 16 and 17, 2026, the Virbo district of Monopoli celebrated the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, combining religious devotion, music, and fine food. The secular program kicked off on Saturday evening with the Apulian folk group Terraross, while the Panzerotto and Pettole Festival stands served traditional specialties. On Sunday, the most solemn moment was the Holy Mass with the procession of the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel through the streets of the district, accompanied by the band. The closing evening was dedicated to music and the fireworks display that lit up the sky over the Monopoli countryside.
The festival takes place in the Virbo district, in the countryside of Monopoli (BA), a few kilometers from the town center. The procession also passes through the nearby Barcato district.
Monopoli can be reached by car via the SS16 Adriatica highway and the A14 motorway (Bari Sud / Monopoli-Fasano exit). From the Monopoli train station, on the Adriatic line, the Virbo district can be reached by car heading inland.
The festival is usually held in May, during a weekend dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.
Admission to the festival is free. Dishes from the Panzerotto and Pettole Festival can be purchased at the food stands at affordable prices.
