A month of sea-themed celebrations in the Old Port of Monopoli
In the heart of the city's autumn calendar, Gozzovigliando brings the Old Port of Monopoli, in the province of Bari, Puglia, to life every Sunday in October. The event was created to celebrate the ancient, daily relationship between the city and its sea, offering moments of discovery, social connection, culture, and entertainment for residents and visitors alike.
At the heart of the event is the gozzo, the traditional wooden boat used by generations of local fishermen. The entire festival revolves around this small, rounded-hull vessel: it is a way to rediscover maritime trades, fishermen's stories, and the seafaring identity of Monopoli, one of the most charming coastal towns on the Apulian Adriatic.
The main attraction is the free gozzo excursions, which depart from Molo Margherita and offer a chance to admire the historic center and the coastline from a fisherman's perspective. Reservations can be made directly at the Gozzovigliando gazebo, subject to availability. Throughout the Sundays, the program includes sailing demonstrations, rowing and canoeing exhibitions, boat trips for people with disabilities, and small-scale fishing activities for children.
The highlight of the festival is the Gozzo Palio, a spectacular race featuring the local fleet, enhanced by the presence of flag-wavers. It is a thrilling competition that blends tradition, sportsmanship, and folklore in the waters of the Old Port.
Along the port and throughout the historic center, you will find artisanal and agricultural markets, local culinary specialties, art exhibitions, guided tours, and themed performances. Musical entertainment is also a staple, with traditional songs and dances accompanying the festive days.
With its educational workshops for children, free admission, and complimentary activities, Gozzovigliando is designed for all ages. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic side of Monopoli, surrounded by flavors, maritime traditions, and the beauty of its Old Port.
For the 2026 edition, Gozzovigliando confirms its appointment with the sea in the Old Port of Monopoli, returning to animate every Sunday in October. The event's return was announced among the city's calendar of events presented at the International Tourism Exchange (BIT) in Milan.
The established format includes free excursions aboard the local fleet's gozzi, the traditional Gozzo Palio, artisanal and gourmet markets, children's workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, and musical entertainment. The detailed calendar of activities will be announced by the Municipality of Monopoli closer to the event.
For 2026, Gozzovigliando returns to animate the Old Port of Monopoli on all Sundays in October. The detailed calendar with times for the free gozzo excursions, the Gozzo Palio, and side activities will be published by the Municipality of Monopoli in the weeks prior to the event.
The established format of the event includes:
