The Panzerotto Festival of Contrada Virbo in Monopoli
In the rural landscape of Contrada Virbo, one of the historic districts of Monopoli (Province of Bari, Apulia), the Festa dell'Aia is one of the most cherished summer festivals. The name refers to the 'aia' (threshing floor), the beaten-earth clearing where grain was once threshed: around this symbol of peasant civilization, the district gathers every year for an evening of celebration that blends tradition, folklore, and great food.
The gastronomic heart of the event is the panzerotto, the fried dough pocket stuffed with tomato and mozzarella that is a true icon of Apulian cuisine. For this reason, the festival is also known as the Panzerotto Festival: stalls set up by local volunteers fry panzerotti and pettole non-stop, accompanied by wine and beer in a simple, authentic atmosphere.
The evening is brought to life by live folk music, featuring local bands like I Cipurrid, and traditional Apulian and Salento dances: the pizzica and the quadriglia draw both young and old into festive circles that continue late into the night. It is the authentic folklore of rural Apulia, passed down from generation to generation.
The Festa dell'Aia is organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Festival Committee of Contrada Virbo, the same community that celebrates the district's patron saint. Included in the official calendar of District Festivals of the Municipality of Monopoli, the event takes place in the church square and the streets of the district, with free admission. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Monopoli, far from the crowded beaches, amidst genuine flavors and rural hospitality.
The 2026 Festa dell'Aia returns to Contrada Virbo on August 11, as confirmed by the official calendar of District Festivals of the Municipality of Monopoli. As per tradition, the district is preparing to welcome visitors with panzerotto stalls, live folk music, and the dances of the pizzica and quadriglia. Admission is free.
The detailed program, including times and guest musical groups, is usually announced by the organizing committee in the weeks leading up to the event on the district's social media channels.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the organizing committee.
Based on previous editions, the evening will feature the opening of food stalls with the panzerotto festival (including pettole and drinks), followed by live folk music and traditional pizzica and quadriglia dances until late at night. Times and names of guest groups will be announced on the district's social media channels in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Contrada Virbo is located in the hinterland of Monopoli (BA), a few kilometers from the town center, and can be reached by car via the provincial roads that connect the city to the rural districts. The Monopoli train station, on the Adriatic line, is the reference point for those arriving by train.
Admission to the festival is free. The event takes place in the evening, with activities starting around 9:00 PM; food stalls and live music continue until late at night.
Organized by the Contrada Virbo Festival Committee. For updates, we recommend checking the Facebook page "Comitato Feste Virbo - Monopoli" or the District Festivals calendar of the Municipality of Monopoli.
