The calendar of patronal feasts in the rural districts of Monopoli, from July to October
The Contrada Religious Festivals are not just a single event, but a true festive season that spans the summer and early autumn in the countryside of Monopoli, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Each district in the vast municipal territory has its own parish, patron saint, or Madonna, and every year it renews the feast that unites the rural community around its small country church.
The result is a widespread calendar: from July to October, celebrations follow one another in the various districts, each with its own fixed date passed down through generations. These are both popular and devotional festivals, where faith intertwines with conviviality, the music of brass bands, and the flavors of traditional Puglian country cuisine.
The participating districts map out the agricultural geography of Monopoli, amidst olive groves, masserie, and trulli. Among the most popular are Contrada Capitolo, which celebrates Saint Clare around mid-August and is one of the most heartfelt festivals of the Monopoli summer, as well as Laghezza, Impalata, Sicarico, Gorgofreddo, Antonelli, Santa Lucia ai Monti, Lamalunga, and Cozzana. Each festival attracts not only the residents of the district but also city dwellers and the many tourists who populate the Adriatic coast in summer.
The heart of every festival remains religious: the solemn mass in honor of the saint and the procession through the streets of the district, with the statue carried on shoulders among the inhabitants. Around this devotional moment, the popular festival is built according to the best Puglian tradition:
Participating in a contrada festival means discovering the most authentic side of Puglia, that of the hinterland and its rural roots, far from the most crowded destinations. Admission is free and the celebrations are open to everyone: an opportunity to get to know the devotional culture of the Municipality of Monopoli and to experience the hospitality of its rural communities.
The 2026 calendar of religious contrada festivals in Monopoli confirms the rich devotional season of the hinterland, with celebrations following one another from mid-July until early October in the various rural communities of the territory. Each festival maintains its traditional date and combines the religious dimension (mass and procession) with the popular one, featuring illuminations, brass bands, and typical Puglian gastronomy. Among the most anticipated events is the feast of Saint Clare in Contrada Capitolo on August 10-11, one of the most popular of the Monopoli summer.
Each festival includes a solemn mass, a procession with the saint's statue, illuminations, a brass band, and food stands. Detailed schedules for individual celebrations are published by the respective parishes and committees in the preceding weeks.
The festivals take place in the various districts of the Monopoli (BA) territory, in Puglia, each at its own church and local square. Contrada Capitolo is located along the coast south of the city, while other districts (Laghezza, Impalata, Gorgofreddo, Cozzana) are in the hilly hinterland.
Monopoli is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bari-Lecce) and by the SS16 exit. A car is recommended to reach the districts, as they are scattered throughout the rural territory.
All contrada festivals are free and open to the public.
Events are spread from July to October; it is advisable to check the updated calendar on the Municipality of Monopoli website for the dates and times of each festival.
