The patronal feast of Blufi at the Madonie sanctuary, blending faith, rural traditions, and Sicilian flavors.
The Madonna dell'Olio Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Blufi, a small town in the province of Palermo nestled within the Madonie Park, in the heart of inland Sicily. The Madonna dell'Olio is the town's patron saint, and every year, a crowd of faithful and pilgrims from across the island gathers around her ancient sanctuary, located just a few kilometers from the town center. More than just a local fair or festival, it is considered one of the few remaining 'truly religious' feasts, preserving its sacred character while opening up to popular conviviality during the celebration days.
The origins of the cult date back to the Middle Ages: a chapel dedicated to the Madonna is documented as early as the 12th century, while the current church features an 18th-century layout. The name 'dell'Olio' (of the Oil) is linked to a spring of mineral oil that once flowed near the sacred site, to which tradition attributed therapeutic properties, particularly for skin diseases; another explanation connects it to the ancient olive groves in the area and the nearby Torrente Oliva. Inside the sanctuary, the wooden icon of the Madonna is veneratedโa statue sculpted in the 18th century and attributed to Filippo Quattrocchi, which is carried in procession during the festival.
The liturgical heart of the festival is August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, preceded by the solemn quindicina: for fifteen mornings at dawn, the faithful gather at the sanctuary for mass and a homily. The most anticipated moment is the pilgrimage on foot from the Cristo Re parish in Blufi to the sanctuary and, above all, the procession of the wooden icon of the Madonna dell'Olio in the afternoon. A second devotional celebration also takes place every year on the Tuesday following Pentecost, with an additional pilgrimage to the sanctuary.
Alongside the religious dimension, the ancient rural traditions of the Madonie territory come to life. At the foot of the sanctuary, the performance 'A Spartenza di l'urtima aria' takes center stage, a re-enactment of the sharing of the final harvest, accompanied by music and tastings of typical products: quagliata, tuma, ricotta, and pane cunsato, as well as 'schiacciate' and other local culinary delights. The evenings conclude with theatrical shows, musical entertainment, and, on the final day, fireworks in Piazza Municipio. A festival that captures the most authentic soul of Blufi and the Madonie region in just a few days.
From August 14 to 16, 2026, Blufi celebrates the three days of the Madonna dell'Olio Festival around the sanctuary in the Madonie Park. The festival combines the religious solemnity of the Assumption with local folk traditions, featuring processions, tastings, and performances open to all.
