The sung procession without a statue in the heart of Scicli
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Canzoncine dell'Immacolata are among the most unique religious and folk traditions of Scicli, a Baroque town in the Province of Ragusa, Sicily. Unlike classic Sicilian processions, no statue or effigy is carried here: the parade of devotees and onlookers is led by collective singing, a true sung prayer that takes place in the streets. This is the peculiarity that makes the Canzoncine unique throughout the Iblean territory.
Around 7:00 PM, people gather spontaneously in front of the church. Someone distributes sheets with the lyrics of the song to be sung to the Madonna, while others bring wine or grappa to "warm up the vocal cords" on cold December evenings. Accompanied by the town band, the procession traverses the streets of the historic center for about two hours, stopping in front of every church and votive shrine to resume singing. It is a powerful, choral experience that unites the entire community.
The festival is divided into two distinct moments linked to two parishes. The Canzoncine of Santa Maria La Nova are held around December 7th, on the eve of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, followed on December 8th by the solemn mass and the procession that travels along Via Nazionale, Corso Umberto, and the streets of the center. The Canzoncine of San Bartolomeo take place the following weekend, with their own procession along Via Ispica, Corso Garibaldi, and Piazza Italia. Each sanctuary has its own lyrics and melodies, passed down from generation to generation.
Since 2011, the Canzoncine have been included in the Register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicily Region (REIS), which promotes the practices, expressions, and knowledge that a community recognizes as part of its cultural heritage. The same recognition has been awarded to other Scicli rituals, such as the Festa delle Milizie and the Easter traditions.
After a period of decline in past decades, the Canzoncine are now experiencing a strong revival, capable of involving the younger generations in particular. Some participate out of deep devotion, singing to the Virgin, while others are more drawn to the folk and popular aspect: everyone, however, finds themselves in a ritual that builds community. For the visitor, witnessing the Canzoncine in the spectacular Baroque streets of Scicli, a UNESCO World Heritage site, means entering the authentic heart of the traditions of the town and south-eastern Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Canzoncine dell'Immacolata in Scicli will be held, as is tradition, on December evenings around the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The official dates and program have not yet been communicated by the organizers. Following custom, the Canzoncine of Santa Maria La Nova precede December 8th, while those of San Bartolomeo take place the following weekend.
Scicli is located in the heart of south-eastern Sicily, in the Province of Ragusa. By car, it can be reached via the SS115; the nearest train stations are those of Scicli and Modica (Syracuse-Gela line). The reference airports are Comiso (about 40 km away) and Catania Fontanarossa (about 100 km away).
The Canzoncine take place on December evenings, around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, starting from the churches of Santa Maria La Nova and San Bartolomeo and crossing the streets of the Baroque historic center.
The event is free and outdoors: warm clothing is recommended for winter evenings, as well as comfortable shoes for following the procession on foot along the streets of the center.
