About Christmas in Ispica

From early December until Epiphany, Ispica celebrates with "Christmas in Ispica - Lights and Traditions," a festive series organized by the Pro Loco Spaccaforno and the Municipality of Ispica, in the province of Ragusa. Artistic illuminations, markets along Corso Garibaldi, the lighting of the tree in Piazza Unità d'Italia, Santa's Post Office for children, concerts in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the famous Living Nativity Scene among the caves of Cava d'Ispica bring the baroque heart of this Iblean town to life for weeks.

Christmas in the baroque heart of Ispica

Every year, from early December until Epiphany, the historic center of Ispica, in the heart of the Ragusa province, transforms into a grand Christmas setting thanks to the "Christmas in Ispica - Lights and Traditions" festival. The initiative, organized by the Pro Loco Spaccaforno in collaboration with the Municipality of Ispica and numerous local associations and private businesses, weaves together spirituality, folk tradition, and festive moments for residents and visitors alike.

Lights, markets, and festive atmosphere

The program kicks off with the switching on of artistic illuminations and the opening of the Christmas markets along Corso Garibaldi, where stalls offer local products, handicrafts, and traditional Iblean sweets. The symbolic heart of the festival is the lighting of the large Christmas tree in Piazza Unità d'Italia, accompanied by school children's choirs and the notes of the Santa Cecilia Wind Orchestra.

For children and families

Among the most beloved events for little ones is Santa's Post Office, set up at the Pro Loco Spaccaforno headquarters on Corso Garibaldi, where children can post and stamp their letters. There is no shortage of rides, inflatables, the Christmas sleigh, creative workshops, and entertainment that fill the squares of the historic center during the festive weeks.

The Living Nativity Scene of Cava d'Ispica

The most evocative attraction of the festival is the Living Nativity Scene, set among the ancient caves carved into the rock of old Spaccaforno, along the Cava d'Ispica: a natural setting reminiscent of the Sassi of Matera. Along a route of about one and a half kilometers, visitors encounter living scenes with performers re-enacting ancient crafts, rituals, and moments of the Nativity.

Sacred music and tradition

The festival also includes Christmas concerts, particularly the one held in the majestic Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and moments dedicated to Ispica's musical tradition. The celebration concludes with the arrival of the Befana on January 6th, bidding farewell to a period that unites devotion, community, and the cultural identity of this Iblean town.

Christmas in Ispica — edition 2026

Following the success of previous editions, "Christmas in Ispica - Lights and Traditions" is expected to return to enliven the historic center of the Iblean town during the 2026 holiday season. Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco Spaccaforno and the Municipality of Ispica: as every year, the festival will likely begin in early December and conclude with the Befana on January 6th.

The dates and program for the 2026 edition of "Christmas in Ispica - Lights and Traditions" have not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the Christmas festival organized by the Pro Loco Spaccaforno with the Municipality of Ispica is expected to take place in the historic center between the beginning of December 2026 and Epiphany, with markets on Corso Garibaldi, the lighting of the tree in Piazza Unità d'Italia, Santa's Post Office, Christmas concerts, and the Living Nativity Scene in Cava d'Ispica. The detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
