The patronal feast of Ispica in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patron saint of Ispica, a town in the Province of Ragusa, located in the heart of the Baroque Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Every year, during the seven days surrounding July 16th, the entire community gathers at the Santuario Parrocchia Madonna del Carmelo to honor its "Patrona Civitatis" with a packed calendar of religious celebrations and civic events.
The festival is rooted in Carmelite tradition: July 16th commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Simon Stock, the Prior General of the Carmelite Order. In Ispica, this devotion is deeply intertwined with local identity, and the Madonna is venerated as the city's protector. The festival is further enriched by the vicariate pilgrimage featuring the relic of Blessed Maria Crocifissa Curcio, a Carmelite nun closely linked to the region.
Beyond the liturgy, the festival showcases its more convivial side: the "Borgo del Carmine in festa" traditional food fair, a parade of musicians and flag-wavers, a photography exhibition dedicated to the cult of the Carmine, and entertainment for families and children. It is an event that, year after year, renews the bond between the people of Ispica and their Patron Saint, attracting visitors eager to discover one of the most heartfelt patronal festivals in southeastern Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Ispica takes place between July 12 and 21. The solemn novena (July 12-20) marks the evenings with the Holy Rosary, sung chaplet, and Holy Mass.
July 16th, the solemnity of the Patron Saint, is the main day: five traditional masses, opening of the Sanctuary at dawn, Supplication to the Virgin, and the evening vicariate Eucharistic concelebration with the city's parish priests. At midnight, the city procession reaches the Sanctuary for the floral tribute, the votive candle, and the presentation of the city keys.
The external festival is scheduled for Sunday, July 21st, with the triumphant procession of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel through the streets of Ispica and a fireworks display at the edge of town.
The detailed liturgical program with complete celebration times is released by the Sanctuary in the days leading up to the festival.
Celebrations take place at the Santuario Parrocchia Madonna del Carmelo and throughout the streets of the center of Ispica (RG), in Sicily.
