The patronal feast of Ragusa, blending faith, candlelit processions, and fireworks over the San Vito Bridge
The Saint John the Baptist Festival is the most deeply felt devotional event in Ragusa, the capital of the province of the same name in Sicily. Saint John the Baptist is the city's principal patron, a devotion rooted in centuries of history; his mother church was elevated to a Cathedral upon the establishment of the Diocese of Ragusa in 1950. The festival seamlessly blends liturgical rites with popular traditions, spanning the summer months and involving the entire historic center community.
The festivities are concentrated in two distinct periods. June 24th marks the nativity of the Baptist, celebrated with an intense liturgical program of masses and the participation of the statue bearers. However, the most anticipated moment is the grand popular festival from August 19th to 29th, ten days filled with religious, cultural, artistic, and sporting events.
The August cycle begins on August 19th with the opening of the Saint's niche and the translation of the statue. In the following days, the program alternates between religious celebrations and local initiatives; on August 27th, the patron's statue is carried in procession to one of the host parishes before returning to the Cathedral.
August 29th, the anniversary of the Baptist's martyrdom, is the main day. In the late afternoon, a solemn Eucharistic celebration takes place, followed by the solemn procession of the Patron Saint, which winds through the streets of the historic center, along Corso Italia, Piazza San Giovanni, and Corso Vittorio Veneto. This is the famous candlelit procession: an endless river of lights accompanying the statue, preceded by the Holy Ark, a refined work of art chiseled in 1731 by master silversmiths from Messina. Many devotees walk barefoot or dressed in red as a sign of a vow or for a received grace. The festival concludes with the return of the Saint to the Cathedral and the spectacular fireworks display over the San Vito Bridge, one of the most scenic moments of the Ragusa summer.
The Saint John the Baptist Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the very identity of Ragusa renewing itself every year, weaving together faith, art, tradition, and community spirit in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Val di Noto.
The 2026 Saint John the Baptist Festival in Ragusa opens with the celebration of the nativity on June 24th, marked by masses and the participation of the statue bearers. The external festival begins on August 19th with the opening of the niche and the translation of the patron's statue.
On August 27th, the Saint's statue is carried in procession to a host parish, before returning to the Cathedral. August 29th, the day of martyrdom, is the heart of the festival: the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the late afternoon is followed by the solemn procession of the Patron Saint through the historic center, along Corso Italia and Piazza San Giovanni, with the Holy Ark and the impressive candlelit procession. The day ends with the return of the statue to the Cathedral and the spectacular fireworks display over the San Vito Bridge.
Enriching the festivities are the Saint John's stalls, the Mons. Pennisi Theater Festival in Piazza San Giovanni, the nighttime cycling race, and the Ragusani nel Mondo award.
Ragusa is accessible by car via the SS115 and SS194 roads; the nearest airport is Comiso (approx. 20 km), followed by Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 100 km). The Ragusa train station connects the city to the Sicilian rail network.
The celebrations are centered at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist and the historic center of Upper Ragusa (Corso Italia, Piazza San Giovanni, Corso Vittorio Veneto). The final fireworks display is held at the San Vito Bridge.
Participation in the celebrations and the procession is free. It is recommended to arrive early on August 29th to witness the candlelit procession and to wear comfortable shoes for navigating the historic center.
