The patronal feast of Sannicandro di Bari, held on the last Sunday of June
On the last Sunday of June, Sannicandro di Bari—a town in the Bari Metropolitan City, Puglia—celebrates its patron saint with the Saint Joseph Patronal Feast. It is the event that, more than any other, brings the entire community together: for three days, the streets of the historic center are filled with lights, music, and devotion, drawing back those who have emigrated to ensure they don't miss the appointment with their patron.
Saint Joseph is the primary patron of Sannicandro di Bari, venerated alongside the Holy Cross. The most poignant moment of the feast is the procession: the statue and the painting of the saint are carried through the village streets accompanied by the faithful. On Sunday morning, the mayor symbolically presents the keys of the city to Saint Joseph, a gesture that entrusts the community to the patron's protection. It is not uncommon for the procession to be greeted by the release of a hot air balloon and daytime fireworks.
The festivities are preceded by a period of spiritual preparation organized by the parish: the pilgrimage of the image of Saint Joseph through local families, the transfer of the painting, and the triduum with evening Eucharistic celebrations. During the feast days, there are numerous holy masses, the solemn procession through the town streets, and the final return of the image, which concludes the cycle of celebrations.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast offers the rich civic program typical of Puglian patronal celebrations:
The Saint Joseph Patronal Feast takes place every year on the last Sunday of June, with celebrations concentrated between the Saturday and the following Monday, which is recognized as a local public holiday in Sannicandro di Bari. The stage for the festival is the town's historic center, with the mother church serving as the hub for religious celebrations and Piazza Unità d'Italia hosting the final shows.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Patronal Feast enlivened Sannicandro di Bari with the usual program of religious and civic celebrations spread over the last weekend of June, ending on Monday the 29th, which was recognized as a local holiday. The days followed the traditional structure of the feast: holy masses and the preparatory triduum, the solemn procession with the patron's image, the handing over of the city keys, brass band tours, concerts under the bandstand, and finally, the fireworks in Piazza Unità d'Italia.
The official calendar featuring the names of the brass bands and pyrotechnic companies was released by the Patronal Feast Committee and the parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
The feast follows a consolidated structure every year, divided into religious and civic moments:
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and artist names, was published by the Patronal Feast Committee in the days preceding the festival.
Sannicandro di Bari is located about 15 km southwest of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS 96 or SP 231; it takes about 20 minutes from Bari. The train station is served by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (Bari–Matera line).
All festivities—procession, brass band concerts, dancing fountains, and fireworks—are free and held outdoors.
During the feast days, it is recommended to park on the outskirts of the center and reach the squares on foot, as many streets in the village are closed to traffic for the procession and performances.
