The patronal feast of Villabate featuring the flower-adorned staff, the traditional banquet, and the procession of the statue
The Saint Joseph Festival is the main religious and popular event in Villabate, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Saint Joseph is the town's patron saint, and his feast, celebrated every year on March 18th and 19th, is a centuries-old tradition that still brings together the entire community and numerous visitors from neighboring towns. The devotion is expressed through a blend of ritual gestures, flavors, and sounds that make this festival one of the most characteristic events in the Palermo province.
The most spectacular and symbolic element of the festival is the Saint Joseph staff: a fir pole about two meters high and weighing around seventy kilos, richly decorated with all kinds of fruit, seasonal vegetables, flowers, and even banknotes offered by the faithful. At the center of the structure, a small shrine bears the image of the Saint. The staff is carried on shoulders by designated bearers, recognizable by their blue sashes, a role passed down from generation to generation within Villabate families.
The eve, March 18th, begins in the morning with the sound of firecrackers, the "alborata" that announces the start of the festivities. Around noon, the parish priest blesses the staff and the Saint Joseph banquet, a rich meal set up in the home of a confrere or at a local business, where traditional Sicilian dishes such as sausage, roast meat, pasta with sardines, and the essential sfinci are served. Immediately after, the bearers walk through the town streets accompanied by drums, the brass band, and a procession of the faithful, who can pin their offerings to the staff and entrust their prayers to the Saint. In the evening, the staff is taken to the Mother Church of Sant'Agata, where it rests for the night. Meanwhile, in front of local churches, parish communities and Caritas distribute the traditional Saint Joseph minestrone.
On March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, before the afternoon Holy Mass, panuzzi—small loaves flavored with wild fennel seeds—are distributed to the faithful after being blessed during the celebration. The highlight is the solemn procession of the wooden statue of the Saint, a work attributed to Bagnasco, which travels through the main streets of the town center amidst the crowd, singing, and popular emotion.
The festival is also an unmissable gastronomic occasion. The sfinci festival celebrates the signature dessert of Saint Joseph, the fluffy Sicilian fritter, while the minestrone and panuzzi renew the ancient bond between faith and shared food.
Among the churches involved, the Mother Church of Sant'Agata, the Church of Saint Joseph, and the Sacred Heart Church stand out, while the Pomara district adds its own convivial moments. The festival is led by the Confraternity of Saint Joseph the Worker together with the parishes and civil authorities.
On March 18, 2026, the festivities opened with the morning firecrackers and, at noon, the blessing of the flower-adorned staff and the banquet. In the afternoon, the bearers with blue sashes led the staff through the streets of Villabate, accompanied by drums and the brass band, to the Mother Church of Sant'Agata. In the evening, Caritas and the parishes distributed the Saint Joseph minestrone. On March 19, 2026, after the distribution of panuzzi with wild fennel seeds, the afternoon procession of the statue of the Saint took place. There was no shortage of the sfinci festival and convivial moments in various areas of the town.
