The patronal feast of the seaside village of Sant'Elia, blending faith, sea, and tradition
In the heart of the waning summer, the small seaside village of Sant'Eliaโa hamlet of the municipality of Santa Flavia, in the province of Palermoโgathers around its patron saint, Maria Santissima Addolorata. The festival, deeply felt by the local fishing community, weaves religious devotion with the folk traditions of a town that has always lived in harmony with the sea. For a few days, the narrow alleys facing the water, the small cove, and the seafront become the stage for a celebration that draws expatriates, vacationers, and visitors from all over Sicily.
The festivities span more than just a few days: spiritual preparation begins with the quindicina, starting on September 1st with daily services at the parish church dedicated to the Addolorata. During the peak week, residents are awakened at the first light of dawn by the alborata: a sequence of blank shots that, for about half an hour with short pauses, announces the festival and concludes with a brief pyrotechnic display. It is the signal the community waits for all year, the moment when the village recognizes itself as part of a single story.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue of the SS. Vergine Addolorata, carried on shoulders through the town streets accompanied by a brass band. The procession winds through the alleys crowded with the faithful, amidst lights, prayers, and hymns, in an atmosphere charged with emotion that unites generations. Devotion to the Madonna Addolorata, traditionally linked to September 15th, is a core identity marker for the fishermen of Sant'Elia, a sign of protection and belonging.
Alongside sacred rites, the festival offers a rich secular program that highlights the village's maritime vocation. The star is the bluefish festival, an opportunity to taste local seafood specialties prepared according to traditional recipes. Not to be missed is the antenna game at the cove, an ancient test of skill and fun that sees both young and old compete on a greased pole extending over the sea: a playful spectacle that gathers the entire community on the shore.
The festival evenings come alive with concerts, musical and folk performances, and entertainment for all ages. The grand finale is entrusted to the traditional fireworks that light up the sky and reflect on the water, giving the bay of Sant'Elia a breathtaking backdrop. The Addolorata festival thus remains one of the most defining events in the calendar of Santa Flavia and the entire Gulf coastline, where the sacred and the profane coexist under the sign of the sea.
The official dates for the 2026 edition are set for September 18 to 20, in the seaside village of Sant'Elia (Santa Flavia, Palermo), at the culmination of the 'quindicina' which begins on September 1st at the Maria SS. Addolorata parish.
As per tradition, the community will gather around the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna, accompanied by the brass band, and will experience the village's most defining moments: the alborata at dawn, the bluefish festival, the antenna game at the cove, and the closing fireworks over the sea.
The complete 2026 program with specific event times has not yet been released: it will be announced by the organizers and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
The festival is held in the seaside village of Sant'Elia, a hamlet of Santa Flavia (Metropolitan City of Palermo), between the Maria SS. Addolorata parish, the village alleys, the cove, and the seafront.
By car: from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Casteldaccia or Bagheria exit, then follow signs for Santa Flavia and Sant'Elia/Porticello. By train: Santa Flavia-Solunto-Porticello station on the Palermo-Messina line, then a short trip to the village.
The village is compact, and traffic is restricted during the festival days: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outer areas. The fish festival and evening shows are the busiest times.
