The ancient Holy Family procession and the Salutu ritual in the Nebrodi mountains
In the heart of the Nebrodi Park, at an altitude of over 400 meters, the small town of Militello Rosmarino, in the province of Messina, preserves one of the most deeply rooted devotions in northern Sicily: the cult of Saint Joseph. Every year, in the second half of March, the village gathers around its Patriarch with a festival that weaves together popular faith, history, and local identity.
The exquisite wooden group depicting Saint Joseph with the Child dates back to 1607 and is attributed to the Li Volsi workshop of Tusa, famous local sculptors. From the beginning, the statue was placed in the Mother Church, in a niche of the left transept embellished by a 17th-century polychrome marble altar. Over the centuries, special customs developed around this altar: the town's weddings were celebrated here, and every Wednesday in March, a solemn mass was held in honor of the Saint.
In the second half of the 18th century, the statue of the Madonna del Soccorso was added to the procession, completing the Holy Family trilogy: Mary, Jesus, and Joseph. Since then, on the day of the festival, the three statues are carried on the shoulders of local carpenters along the ancient circular route that crosses the streets of Militello Rosmarino, accompanied by the town band, fireworks, and the choral participation of the community.
The most intense and evocative moment is the Salutu ritual, which takes place on the churchyard of the Chiesa del Soccorso. Here, the bearers of the statues bow three times, bringing to life the greeting between the Madonna and Saint Joseph. At the end of the encounter, the effigy of the Madonna del Soccorso is returned to her niche inside the church, while Saint Joseph and the Child continue toward the Mother Church. Popular tradition interprets this gesture as the meeting of spouses who remain together only on the day of the festival, only to remain separated for the rest of the year: a touching interpretation that makes the Salutu a moment filled with emotion for the entire town.
The Saint Joseph Festival is one of the defining events of Militello Rosmarino and the Nebrodi municipalities, where the cult of the Patriarch remains very much alive. The liturgical date is March 19th, but the solemn procession is traditionally held in the days immediately following. For visitors, the occasion is also an invitation to discover an authentic village in inland Sicily, immersed in the greenery of the Nebrodi Park.
For the 2026 edition, the celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph in Militello Rosmarino were concentrated on Sunday, March 22nd. The program included Holy Mass in the Mother Church and, following that, the ancient procession of the Holy Family through the town streets.
The heart of the day was the Salutu ritual, the encounter between the Madonna del Soccorso and Saint Joseph celebrated on the churchyard of the Chiesa del Soccorso, amidst fireworks and the participation of the entire community. At the end, the Madonna returned to her niche while Saint Joseph and the Child continued toward the Mother Church.
Militello Rosmarino can be reached by car from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit Sant'Agata di Militello), then continuing along the provincial road that climbs toward the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest train station is in Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The festival is celebrated in March, around the liturgical date of the 19th. The procession and the Salutu ritual take place in the afternoon, between the Mother Church and the Chiesa del Soccorso.
Admission to the festivities is free. We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the uphill streets of the historic center.
