The Festival of the Madonna dei Pescatori, dedicated to Maria Santissima del Mare, is one of the most beloved traditions in Sant'Agata di Militello, a coastal town in the Province of Messina, Sicily, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea at the foot of the Nebrodi Park. It traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of August and stems from the maritime community's devotion to the Madonna, the protector of fishermen and all those who live by the sea.
The most anticipated and evocative moment is the sea procession. In the late afternoon, the statue of Maria SS. del Mare is carried in a procession along Via Cosenz to the port; after the celebration of Holy Mass, the statue is embarked for the solemn procession on the water. At sunset, the boat carrying the Madonna sails along the coast, accompanied by a parade of illuminated and decorated fishing boats, while the crowd gathered on the seafront follows the passage with great devotion.
The festival attracts citizens, vacationers, and tourists who flock to the port and beaches of Sant'Agata di Militello in the height of summer. It is an opportunity to experience the town's maritime identity, amidst popular faith, local gastronomy, and the magic of illuminated boats crossing the gulf at dusk. An event that unites the religious dimension with the community spirit, recognized by the Municipality as one of the territory's recurring festivities.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Festival of the Madonna dei Pescatori have not yet been announced.
