The summer patronal feast of Militello Rosmarino, featuring processions, traditional runs, and the heritage of the Nebrodi mountains
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, perched on the Inganno ridge between the Rosmarino valleys, the village of Militello Rosmarino (Province of Messina, Sicily) honors its patron saint, San Biagio, with two celebrations: the winter feast on February 3rd and the summer one, which is deeply cherished by the many emigrants who return home for the occasion, held every year on August 24th and 25th. This summer event is the community's main celebration, drawing families back from all over Italy and abroad.
San Biagio is venerated as the protector of the throat: tradition depicts him saving a child from certain death after swallowing a fish bone. The devotion of the locals is expressed through an ancient and precious Baroque statue, adorned with "gold" ornaments, colorful ribbons, and silver bells, kept in the Mother Church, the Duomo di San Biagio, which dominates the medieval historic center.
The festivities are preceded, on the Sunday before the feast, by the evocative horseback procession to the "Cugnu" of San Vrasi, where Holy Mass is celebrated. During the festival days, the rites that have marked the town's devotion for centuries are renewed:
Alongside the religious rites, the summer evenings come alive with music: shows and concerts in Piazza Lodato conclude the festivities amidst lights and market stalls. In recent years, the square has hosted young stars of the Italian music scene and traditional Sicilian groups, turning this Nebrodi village into a gathering point for the entire valley.
More than just a patronal feast, the San Biagio Summer Festival represents the soul of Militello Rosmarino: an occasion where the sacred and the profane, peasant memory, and the return of emigrants blend together, keeping the popular traditions of one of the most characteristic villages of the Nebrodi Park alive.
The 2026 San Biagio Summer Festival in Militello Rosmarino is confirmed for August 24th and 25th, 2026. The two days will follow the usual schedule: on August 24th, the Rito dell'Entrata with the procession of the Madonna del Carmelo and the transfer of the saint's statue to the high altar of the Mother Church, followed by the tossing of the "cucciddati" in Piazza Lodato; on August 25th, the solemn procession of the Baroque statue with the traditional "runs", the blessing of the children, and the spectacular "Salva" fireworks.
Details regarding civil events, musical guests, and schedules will be announced by the Organizing Committee in the weeks preceding the festival.
Militello Rosmarino can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Sant'Agata di Militello exit and continuing into the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest train station is Sant'Agata di Militello (Tyrrhenian line), from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The summer festival takes place on August 24th and 25th, with preparatory rites in the preceding days (the horseback procession to the "Cugnu" on the Sunday before).
All religious and civil events, processions, and concerts in Piazza Lodato are free and open to the public.
Parking is limited in the historic center: it is recommended to arrive early. Don't miss the "cucciddati" and the typical products of the Nebrodi area.
