The tomato-sauce maccheroni of the Gaglio district: a blend of devotion and flavor in Sant'Agata di Militello
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Maccarruna cu sucu Festival is a young yet deeply felt tradition that enlivens the Gaglio district of Sant'Agata di Militello every summer. This coastal town in the province of Messina sits in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sicily, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The event takes place in the Gaglio-Cavarretta square and serves as a convivial highlight within the festivities dedicated to Maria Santissima Immacolata, the district's patron saint, celebrated by residents with two days of events in mid-August.
The heart of the evening is the maccarruna cu sucu, maccheroni dressed with tomato sauce according to the traditional family recipe. It is a humble, identity-defining dish that recalls the peasant cuisine of the Nebrodi mountains and the flavors of Sunday dinners from the past. The long tables set up in the square allow residents and visitors to sit together and enjoy freshly served pasta in an atmosphere of authentic neighborhood celebration. The festival is preceded, on the previous evening, by a more informal gathering featuring street food specialties like pane cunzatu, mortadella sandwiches, and draft beer, while children can enjoy inflatables and games.
The maccheroni evening combines taste with entertainment: in recent editions, musical entertainment has been provided by Giuseppe Macaione, who accompanies the dinner with live music, turning the square into a lively party hub. Between courses, the Gaglio district fills with people, singing, and dancing, capturing that sense of community typical of small Sicilian village festivals.
The festival is more than just gastronomy: it is an integral part of the feast of Maria Santissima Immacolata, an expression of the district's popular devotion. The two days of festivities, usually August 12th and 13th, intertwine religious moments with social gatherings, maintaining the balance typical of local patronal feasts in Sicily, where faith becomes an opportunity for the entire community to meet and share.
The Maccarruna cu sucu Festival is part of the rich summer calendar of Sant'Agata, featuring festivals, concerts, religious events, and cultural appointments promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Agata di Militello and numerous local associations. For those visiting the Nebrodi coast in August, it is a genuine opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Sicily, far from tourist circuits, amidst traditional flavors and the warmth of the local people.
The 2026 edition of the Maccarruna cu sucu Festival does not yet have an official program published. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to be held in mid-August in the Gaglio district of Sant'Agata di Militello, as part of the festivities for Maria Santissima Immacolata. To find out the final dates and details, we recommend following the channels of the district's festival committee and the Municipality of Sant'Agata di Militello.
The festival takes place in the Gaglio-Cavarretta square, in the Gaglio district, in Sant'Agata di Militello (ME), in the hilly area behind the town center.
By car: Take the Sant'Agata di Militello exit on the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, then follow signs for the Gaglio district. By train: Arrive at the Sant'Agata di Militello station on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line, then continue by car towards the district.
The event is traditionally held in mid-August (August 12-13), starting in the evening at 8:30 PM. Admission to the festival area is free; the plate of maccheroni and other specialties are paid for individually at popular, local-festival prices.
We recommend arriving early to secure a seat at the tables. Dates may vary from year to year: please check the program on the festival committee's and the Municipality's channels before setting off.
