The end-of-summer festival in the Torrecandele district, blending Marian devotion, local food, and entertainment.

The Torrecandele Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Sant'Agata di Militello, a Tyrrhenian town in the province of Messina (Sicily). Held in the district of the same name, a hillside neighborhood overlooking the sea, it celebrates Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom the community is bound by deep-rooted Marian devotion. The festival originates and revolves around the small votive shrine of the Madonna and is organized by the festival committee with the support of the Santa Lucia Parish, in the diocese of Patti.
The religious heart of the festival is marked by rituals repeated for generations. In the days leading up to the celebration, the Holy Rosary is recited before the Madonna's shrine, a moment of prayer that brings the neighborhood residents together. The solemn day is marked by the procession of the statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the streets of Torrecandele, accompanied by the brass band, and by Holy Mass celebrated outdoors in the square, animated by the parish choir.
Beyond its devotional dimension, the festival is an occasion for meeting and joy for the entire community. A must-attend is the lemon granita festival, a sweet symbol of the Sicilian summer, served during the festival evenings. The program alternates over the years between vernacular theatrical comedies, local club performances, concerts by musical groups, and Italian pop music guests who have graced the Torrecandele stage. To crown the festivities, at the stroke of midnight, traditional fireworks illuminate the sky over the coast, accompanied by the notes of the brass band.
The Torrecandele Festival is traditionally held at the end of summer, between the last weekend of August and the first days of September. It is an event that ideally closes the summer season in Sant'Agata di Militello, attracting not only the residents of the district but also visitors from the town center and neighboring Nebrodi villages.
Participating in the Torrecandele Festival means connecting with the most authentic side of Sicily, that of neighborhood feasts where faith, music, good food, and a sense of community merge into a single atmosphere. It is an ideal experience for those visiting the province of Messina at the end of summer who wish to discover the living traditions of the Tyrrhenian coast.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Torrecandele Festival have not yet been announced. Following the custom of recent years, the event should take place at the end of summer, between the last weekend of August and the beginning of September, in the Torrecandele district of Sant'Agata di Militello, with the usual procession of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the lemon granita festival, and evening shows. We will update this page as soon as the festival committee makes the calendar public.
Sant'Agata di Militello can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Sant'Agata di Militello exit) and by train thanks to the station on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line. The Torrecandele district is located in the upper part of the town, a short distance from the center.
The festival takes place in the open-air spaces of the district and is free of charge for all religious events and shows.
We recommend checking the final program with the Santa Lucia Parish or the festival committee's social media channels, as dates and guests may vary from year to year.
